Well, thank you Ms. Terry Haugen for inspiring this blog. We were joking in another blog about sending head shots for the book I'm NOT writing but would love you to comment on the blog anyway - and it dawned on me that yeah, I hate getting my photo taken and I didn't particularly enjoy getting the one you see here on my profile done (although I hope that doesn't translate as such).
However, it is essential, I feel to present your face to the public who you speak with, email and contact but they don't know what you look like if you should happen to make an appointment to meet with them. They have at least seen you to be able to identify who you are. You can refer them to your website or AR profile or wherever your photo may be or just attach it in your email. Humans are visual creatures. It matters to the client to feel at ease upon your meeting. It's the perfect ice breaker and puts you both at ease.
The investment in a professional head shot is worth it (mine was around $80 thru Motophoto and I have full copyrights to use it however I need to, print media, news, web etc.) and you'll also feel better about having it! Taking digital photos of yourself for a start isn't bad, but honestly, you'll be so much happier going and having it professionally done. It was one of the first things I did and I would recommend it to any business person.
Tips if you decide to go and have it done (based on my experience)
- Get a reference from someone whose photo you LIKE! Ask where they got it done which specific store, these places are usually chains and people matter there including who takes your photo
- Call ahead and ask what you need to do to prepare for shot
- Talk to the photographer - they are people too and understand being uncomfortable (Jerry, the photog I had was great and honest and made me feel very comfortable, we laughed a lot)
- Bring several changes of clothing (tops and jackets mostly unless doing full body) they usually offer several poses and backgrounds and you get to pick the best one
- Women, bring your make up for touch ups (lip gloss is apparently good for photos and I don't wear it often but I brought it also do your full makeup at home - the light may not be the same in their dressing rooms)
- Relax! The first few shots were rather uncomfortable (unless you like this sort of thing) but after a while it was easy
- Smile and think how great you'll feel once you've got it!
I searched AR before posting this and you've just got to see and read this blog! It says all I really need to say. However, I'd like to see the photo of the writer of this blog too!
PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD YOUR PHOTO TO YOUR COMMENT! OR JUST A PHOTO!
