Professional Business Photos - I want to SEE You!

Well, thank you Ms. Terry Haugen for inspiring this blog.  We were joking in another blog about sending head shots for the book I'm NOT writing but would love you to comment on the blog anyway - and it dawned on me that yeah, I hate getting my photo taken and I didn't particularly enjoy getting the one you see here on my profile done (although I hope that doesn't translate as such).

However, it is essential, I feel to present your face to the public who you speak with, email and contact but they don't know what you look like if you should happen to make an appointment to meet with them.  They have at least seen you to be able to identify who you are. You can refer them to your website or AR profile or wherever your photo may be or just attach it in your email.  Humans are visual creatures. It matters to the client to feel at ease upon your meeting.  It's the perfect ice breaker and puts you both at ease.

The investment in a professional head shot is worth it (mine was around $80 thru Motophoto and I have full copyrights to use it however I need to, print media, news, web etc.) and you'll also feel better about  having it! Taking digital photos of yourself for a start isn't bad, but honestly, you'll be so much happier going and having it professionally done.  It was one of the first things I did and I would recommend it to any business person.

Tips if you decide to go and have it done (based on my experience)

  • Get a reference from someone whose photo you LIKE! Ask where they got it done which specific store, these places are usually chains and people matter there including who takes your photo
  • Call ahead and ask what you need to do to prepare for shot
  • Talk to the photographer - they are people too and understand being uncomfortable (Jerry, the photog I had was great and honest and made me feel very comfortable, we laughed a lot)
  • Bring several changes of clothing (tops and jackets mostly unless doing full body) they usually offer several poses and backgrounds and you get to pick the best one
  • Women, bring your make up for touch ups (lip gloss is apparently good for photos and I don't wear it often but I brought it also do your full makeup at home - the light may not be the same in their dressing rooms)
  • Relax! The first few shots were rather uncomfortable (unless you like this sort of thing) but after a while it was easy
  • Smile and think how great you'll feel once you've got it!

I searched AR before posting this and you've just got to see and read this blog! It says all I really need to say.  However, I'd like to see the photo of the writer of this blog too!

Susan - unless you've really changed hair or you look completely different, 3 years isn't that long - just think about our Driver's Licences!

Ginger - Great shots!

I agree, the business suit is very professional and looks great for the web, but your white shirt is also very good, says, "I'm approachable, friendly and have a sense of style".  The blue one give to your husband framed in a nice holder - I can see why he likes that but of the three, for business, I'd go with either of the other two, depends on what message you're going for.  I also had a "suit" one and really, that's NOT me - I think I can be professional without a black jacket but that's just me.  For Realtors, that seems to be the "look",  I'm NOT a Realtor, but a Stager, and I didn't want to confuse clients either, because it's easy to do with the variety of professions in the real estate industry.  That's my 2 cents for ya!

Hi Karen, nice post!

The silhouettes in AR...it is almost like talking to a ghost or a stalker.

Get your photos up rainers and please have them as current as possible. And for emails, try addbranding.com, it is free.

Karen- I HATE having my picture taken.  I always have.  I don't think I will ever change.  However, I have been considering taking the plunge and getting a new head shot to update along with the rebranding.  I may need a shove.

Ginger - I love the shot of you in the white.  It has more personality.  The black suit is nice, but one you would find on any website - it doesn't say anything special about you.  The blue is pretty, but I like the white the best.

Sheron - thanks for the "addbranding.com" advice - I'll check it out

Karen - it's important to have!

Kimberly - I hate it too! I'm the one taking the photos not IN them.  But you should really do it and just get over the weirdness - these places deal with people like us all the time - I feel your pain but once you do it you'll be very happy you took the time and invested in yourself

Karen - I am photo-phobic but as soon as I get my courage up I will remember this post when I have my pictures taken.

Ginger - I vote for the picture on the right in the white blouse. It looks like you are creative, fun and a bit spunky!

Funny you posted this.  A little while ago I wrote a blog Putting a Face to the Name...Finally.  Although I am still not happy with the picture.  It was taken last November at a Home Show I was participating in.  I have ever since been looking for a good photographer to take professional photos.  I think these are very important.

Here I am:

I wonder how long it will take me to find a photographer...

Hi Karen - I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who hates having my picture taken!  As you know, it took me quite a while to post mine on AR.  Previously I had been one of those sillhoute phantoms. (lol).  Anyway, I agree, putting a face to the name is a good idea.  This is especially true on the internet.  Seeing a professional picture will stick with someone even more than the written word.

As for Ginger, I like the photo in the suit.  They all look great, however, the black jacket and crisp white blouse look really professional and will command respect.  Even though the workplace is more casual these days, a suit and white blouse are classic and look much better in professional photos than more casual attire.

Kimberly - I'm sorry I missed that post! Finding a photographer shouldn't be too difficult, ask any Realtor whose card had a photo of them on it you like who did it. There are lots of chains that take portraits and business head shots, Olan Mills, Picture People, Motophoto, etc. Your photo is nice but you're too far back and then you are competing with the black thingy behind you. If that black thing hadn't been there you would have really stood out. - Good luck finding a photographer!

Maureen - Hi! You did come to mind as I was writing this because we were corresponding and I wanted so badly to see you and put a face behind the good words and comments you were giving - you are one sweet lady, not a little phantom! You always have great insight too so as you say there,

"Seeing a professional picture will stick with someone even more than the written word." really rings true!

I don't always recall the blogs and posts I read, but as soon as I see the name on a blog or comment, if I know what they look like (from their AR profile), I immediately see their face in my head.  And it's almost like we've already met in person!

I haven't gotten any professional photos taken (well, except for Glamour Shots back in the 80's but we won't talk about those!)  Not sure why I hate my picture taken... I'm just going to look older the longer I wait!

Judy - I hate photos because I truly am NOT photogenic - the different angles, the light, I'm never looking in the right direction they all play a factor - most people say I don't look like myself in regular family photos - a business man I know (before I had it professionally done) told me my photo made me look old and it looked nothing like I did in person - THAT made me really upset  and DO something. The truth hurts but it kicked me in the butt!

A good photographer knows how to position you, tell you how to tilt your head, your "good side" etc... Also again, be honest with yourself and the photographer, they're human just like us and understand the feeling, just because you're a "business professional" doesn't make you confident in front of the camera.  It's totally uncomfortable especially when you know how you come out in regular photos.

The photo you see here of me - it was not the most comfortable of positions because I was leaning back head turned, shoulders forward balancing myself on a little stool  - but it looks natural to me - not to brag - but it's the look I wanted to let people know that I'm approachable yet professional and I am HAPPY to work with you! I had many others to choose from but this was the one that showed me how I believe I am - which was a weird experience to actually feel GOOD about a photo. It makes a world of difference in how you approach the business world.  I say go for it - find a good reference and just DO IT!

Another tip is to keep the picture updated!!  I get annoyed when I see the person and they don't look like their photo AT all!!!  Funny thing with my picture... the photographer takes the pictures in a parking garage because the lighting is better!!  So that "background" is cement!

Hi Karen!

You bring up a great point!  Actually when I first posted my profile on AR I didn't yet have a current picture, so as a temporary measure I plopped my company logo up there.  It wasn't an effort to obscure who I was, just a logistical issue.  Now I do have a picture, but I've kinda grown to like my logo up there (sorry guys!), but for quite awhile I've had my photo on my AR profile page, and also have it in the introduction page of my new web site, www.leslieolsoninteriors.com.  If you haven't "seen" me before...hey there!

I like your white background photo used online. I just like that style right now. Its striking on a web page. I prefer to stick with my 'a crye-leike blogger' graphic though :)

Lori - yes it is important to update at least every five years or if you change your hair color!

Leslie - I am so happy to finally see you! I do like your logo - it's very cool (a different kind of face)- but it's nice to see your beautiful face too!

Angie - Thank you! I had choices but to me that white background comes out off the page better

Susan - good suggestion - only one glass though? ;}
