Interesting stuff.   I haven't heard of this out on the street yet.  I can think of a few ways around this ruling, but we'll see how CPA's are handling it.

In the past month the IRS has warned CPAS' Accountants and Tax Preparation Companies that can not solicit their client base with any services other than accounting.  If have an accounting firm dares to offer services beyond accounting, say insurance there is going to big problems. By verdict and decrie of the IRS you can no longer contact your client base by direct mail or email except to say hello and tell them you are still breathing and in the accounting business. If you do not obey the IRS can fine you or take away your license to practice.  I saw a copy of the letter sent by the IRS with my own two eyes so I am not relating a second hand story here.  The question is where does it stop? If you own a hair salon will they stop you from doing facials?

CPAS' Accountants and Tax Preparation Companies that can not solicit their client base with any service other than accounting.  Do we or do we not live in a free country.  We have to stop this madness.

Tim - you are correct.   I thought this info should be passed on.  Robin did the rest of us an excellent service by blogging this in the first place.   What's next?  RE Agents not being able to help stage a home for sale?   Or not being able to get into Property Management?

I know of a CPA that works exclusively with owners on Gas Stations keeping their books and doing tax work for them.   But I also know that he does consulting for Buyers of Gas Stations and in he has a clause stating that his clients must sell a Gas Station through him.   Guess he'll have to open a new company to do everything but taxes....
