Cause for Pause - The Superman Slide

Homeless ManCause for Pause.  As I was walking to the Grants Pass MLS office, which is located only a few short steps away from my office, I had a cause for pause.  You see, there is a resident homeless man who camps out on the side porch of our local MLS office.  As I was walking on the sidewalk, he called out to me saying; "Watch your step, you don't want to trip, like the last time."

Initially, his comments startled me as I didn't see him right away.  My next reaction was to focus on the sidewalk which was barely visible this time of year due to the fallen leaves from the trees,  There is a raised section of the sidewalk that has buckled from an over-grown tree root.  I had taken a tumble there once before, which was witnessed by the homeless man.  He offered to help me then, but I quickly said no thanks, and went on my way.

On this day, I chuckled at his comment and said; "You remembered when I did the Superman slide on the sidewalk?"  He laughed too.  We exchanged smiles and I went on my way.  But for several days after that, I couldn't stop thinking about our brief conversation.  I wondered what caused this man to become homeless.  I have seen him many times over the past year, but this was the first time I was able to look past his ragged dirty clothes and see a man who smiled and had a sense of humor.

Just a few days later, I asked him if he would like half of my tuna sandwich, and he said yes with a smile.  It was a bit chilly that day with the temperature being somewhere in the low 40's.  When I walked back to my office and made myself a cup of coffee, I thought he would probably like a hot cup of coffee too.  When I offered it to him, I asked if he liked it black or with cream and sugar.  He replied; "black," with another big smile on his tan weathered face.  Once again, I went on my way.

It didn't occur to me to ask his name, but I hope to do so in the near future.  For now, he is the homeless man who camps out on the side porch of our local MLS office.  Today, I had a cause for pause.  I will no longer ignore what is staring me straight in the face; the raised sidewalk, the superman slide, the kind words of a homeless man, and Loving Thy Neighbor as Thyself :)

Melinda, I appreciate your kindness to the man.  Getting involved can be risky, but also rewarding.  Check with local police and shelters about the man and his back story as you get involved.  He's likely known to them and they can advise you on how to be most helpful.

You never know what can cause a person to be homeless ,with all the foreclosures today we have more homeless people than you think. At the age of 17 I spent a whole summer homeless, up in Montana in those day you could just camp out ,hit a food pantry once in a while , sneak into the forest service camps for a daily shower after everyone went to work. It is a time in life I will never forget .

You look awful kind be careful this man could be just fine but you just don't know.

Thanks Jon & Charles ~ No courage here, just a very simple act of faith.  I believe he made a bigger impression on me, than I did on him :)

Dan ~ I appreciate the thoughts on safety.  I can honestly say that I wasn't the slightest bit concerned about that.  I guess because I have seen him there for so long, that he is practically my neighbor.  Aside from that, he is not the "typical" homeless person you see pan-handling for money.

John ~ So true, and blessings to you as well :)

Melinda -

Homeless people are people first and homeless second.  We may not say the noun before the adjective, but that dosn't mean the adjective is the greater reality.

Thanks Elizabeth ~ I am sure your struggles at 17 made you a much stronger woman today.  Blessings to you for rising above your circumstance at such a young age!

Melinda, for a long time I lived in Santa Cruz, Ca and there is a large homeless population in that area, much to my surprise alot of the homeless folks that I interacted with were homeless by there own choice. They chose to drop out of mainstream life. I can't say as I would have made a similar choice, but that is me, they are free to make that decision should they choose. I would be mindful of safety all in all....

Too cool.....I've befriended a homeless guy when I used to live in Chicago.  I remember his name was Charlie.  He had a good story and insisted on "paying me back" by painting and doing odd jobs for me.  I refused, but it was a great relationship when I lived down there.  Kudos to you.  Just let the Holy Spirit lead.  Good stuff.

Melinda, good for you!  Coming from Chicago, I guess I'm always a little skeptical, but sometimes you just know when a helping hand can make a difference.  You may have read Kathys story, like you she took a chance.

Hi Nick ~ I hadn't read Kathy's story, until now :)  Sounds like another kindred spirit.  What I didn't mention in my blog is that I searched the yellow pages for a motel near our office, then I went back to ask the homeless man if he would like to stay there for the night.  Unfortunately, he had already left.  So, I prayed that he would find warm shelter for the evening.  I haven't seen him since, so I am hoping he is okay.  Thanks for sharing Kathy's story :)

Melinda, you've certainly done what you can and I know we can't help everyone...it's good to see people help when they can.
