Somewhere Where Everybody Knows Your Name

No, it's not Cheers in Boston.  It's a great little place snuggled in a corner in the OakBrook Shopping Center in Laguna Hills, California.  The first time you go in, you'll be warmly greeted by one of the managers and many of the patrons.  I was intrigued by the name modestly posted on the outside of the building "Yarn Lady".  I have a great friend who loves to knit and is always looking for new resources, so I went inside.

Behind that front door was a whole new world!  There were the normal bins and cubbies filled with beautiful yarns, but there was so much more.  There were some big dining room-type tables and chairs where the classes are held.  There were recliners and rockers and seating areas in front of televisions where instructional videos were available for viewing.  And all through the store, beautiful samples of creations that could be made using patterns and materials available in the store.

The most interesting thing of all was a display that lined the tops of two walls in the store.  They were beautiful little baby sweaters in so many cute styles and lovely colors.  I asked store manager, Nancy Elkins, about the display.  She explained that the sweaters were made by people who frequent the store.  They were all being donated to Stitches from the Heart.  They do this a couple of times a year and Stitches from the Heart comes in and picks them up for distribution to families with premature babies.  The organization was started by a lady in Santa Monica who read an article about premies going home with next to nothing to wear.  Each person who contributes a baby sweater at the Yarn Lady is entered into a drawing for a $100 gift certificate to be used at the Yarn Lady store.  But, I imagine the real joy of creating these precious little sweaters is in knowing that they'll go to a precious little child and family in need.

If you're out near Laguna Hills Mall and would like to experience a wonderful atmosphere of caring and fun...stop by the Yarn Lady store at 24371 Avenida De La Carlota, Laguna Hills, CA  92653 in the Oakbrook Shopping Center.  Their telephone number is (949) 770-7809.  Stop in, say hello, introduce yourself and  eveyone will make you feel like part of a happy family.  You're going to love this great little place where everybody knows your name!

Rich - It's so much fun to showcase the local businesses.  This one is a real find!

Maureen - There was a time when my mom knitted day and night.  Sadly her arthritis just makes it impossible now.

Maureen - Yes this place sure is a thriving Mom & Pop.  I want to give them all the support I can to keep thriving.

Jason - Thanks so much for your kind words.  My husband and I had a Mom and Pop business many years ago and we certainly appreciated anything people could do to promote our business.  It usually cost us.  Rarely did anyone propose an offer that didn't have a large price tag attached.  It's my pleasure to promote businesses in our communities that are unique and provide good products and services.  Thanks for stopping by!
