One of the favored pastimes here in beautiful Washington State is clam digging. The WA Dept. of Fish & Game has an excellent website full of helpful facts, resources, and regulations on harvesting shellfish.

Hey Rich, I have many happy memories of going clam digging when I was a kid. I also liked making roads in the sand. You need to find a picture of a clam gun--probably many of the folks do not not what it is or looks like.

Rich, my favorites are the "steamers" either with the drawn butter, fried in a batter "whole belly". In fact, and call me crazy, I like the fried "whole belly clams" better than I like lobster, and I love lobster.
