Update from Equality California

Dear EQCA member,

Remember the uproar when former MISS CALIFORNIA USA Carrie Prejean said that she opposed marriage equality during the pageant? Rather than agree to EQCA's invitation to meet with us and an LGBT family, she used her 15 minutes of fame to become the spokesmodel for the right-wing National Organization for Marriage.

Now, the MISS CALIFORNIA USA pageant has offered EQCA and Ms. Prejean 30 seconds each during this Sunday's broadcast. We are showing an ad featuring Mary Kate, the teenage daughter of lesbian moms, who talks from the heart about her family and how discrimination in marriage hurts real people, including children.

Watch the ad on Sunday or click here to see it now, and make a donation so we can tell stories like this one to millions of Californans.

It's our stories that win hearts and change minds. Give today so Californians will hear our stories on the air and door to door.

We deeply appreciate the opportunity provided by MISS CALIFORNIA USA to show Californians how denying same-sex couples the right to marry affects real people.

All families deserve to be treated equally. Help us tell our stories.

In solidarity,

Geoff Kors

Hi Chris, This is a very important topic.  I think that equality of this nature will always be a battle and it is sad.  The thing I have noticed is that it really boils down to intelligence.  I really think that the smarter people are the less they discriminate.

Chris:  An excellent video.  I don't know what those opposed to equality for all can be so afraid of.  Fear is a terrible thing... and, as Jane says above... I think she has a point.  The more intelligent people are... the less they seem to discriminate.  Perhaps also thrown in there is... the less they seem to fear.  The saying goes... we have nothing to fear... but fear itself.  How bout we add... we have nothing to fear... but stupidity itself.

Jane, you could be very right about that.  The problem is that way too often people believe all the misinformation and propaganda (even though it's so glaringly obvious that it is false) rather than thinking for themselves.

Karen Anne, We have nothing to fear but stupidity itself.  That, sadly, is too true.  I feel sorry for people on a certain level because it must feel like pure hell living under these delusions.  However, there is no excuse for following blindly and not thinking for yourself.

The other thing is that we need to encourage straight people to continue to overpopulate the nation. If you look at voting in the last few presidential elections, regardless of which candidate won the whole state, the liberal and/or Democratic candidates continue to win the big cities, i.e., with more than 250,000 people. The only exception I could find was Salt Lake City. Duh. So if we can continue to expand the cities, i.e., people live in closer proximity to people who might not necessarily be like them, the greater likelihood that we'll have equality for all.

Happy Thanksgiving from our house to yours!

Hi Russel.  I guess we can't require common decency and common sense, though it would be nice.  The thing that I can't imagine is if these same people fighting against equality will, after they have lost, think about how stupid they sounded.  I wonder the same about those who fought against a woman's right to vote.  Did they ever get it?  It's just so embarrassing for their children, I am sure.

Chris:  Noper.  Common sense and common decency is something that seems so beyond the folks who fight against equality... and fight FOR things like Prop 8.  They would have to be open-minded... which they are not.  They are so convinced that they are right, and point at their various "holy books" as proof... that they will never change.

I have even seen articles posted lately suggesting that the only folks who should be allowed to vote are those who pay taxes... which would obviously take the vote away from many of the poor and the elderly.  What pompous clowns.

That's beyond crazy Karen Anne!  I can't even imagine being stuck in a mindset like that.  Scary as hell.
