Beware of solicitations to file corporate officer lists

I know better - but I still got taken in.

Earlier this year I filed our annual corporate officer's list with the state for $25.00.

A few months later, I was solicited with a very "official" looking document from a 3rd party, which I did not take the time to investigate thoroughly.

It appeared that I was being charged a penalty of over $200 by the state for failure to provide my annual list properly (or at all).

So I paid the fee and sent in the document - only it turns out it was not the state at all but to this overpriced, cleverly disguised company.

Watch out!  Check your mail carefully before paying anyone anything, It did state on the form that it was not a government form, but in my concern and haste I did not read it carefully.

You can easily accomplish this task for around $25 if you visit your state's website and download the appropriate form.

Thanks for the warning.  There are a lot of unscrupulous companies out there.  One recently sent me an "invoice" that was very official-looking, for search engine listings .... but since I do all my own SEO work I knew it was a fake.  They probably find plenty of people though who are too busy to carefully examine their "invoices" and just send in the $75.00 fee.

You are so right, Maureen.

The bigger a company is, it is more likely to happen.  I have received invoices in the mail too, particularly for directory listings in directories I've never advertised in. They hope someone in Accounts Payable will just go ahead and pay it.  Then you're locked into some one year contract.

You just can't trust anything you receive via phone, email or snail mail anymore!  I'm sorry you were a victim, but appreciate the warning!
