Another Life Lesson from my 4 Year Old!

Amy Hahn Photo
Last night, my four year old (soon to be five), and I held our very own board game marathon.  We each chose 2 of our favorite games, got our popcorn and hot cocoa and sat down to challenge each other for the Hahn Board Game Championship. I was doing pretty good until we got to "Operation".  I kept hitting the sides and the obnoxious buzzer would go off, the nose would light up, and I was getting my butt kicked by a four year old.

Tanner said, "Mommy", you just need to slow down, take your time and you'll get it".  I said, "I know, but I've got laundry to do and blogs to write and prices to change and dishes to unload and I need to get ready for that meeting on Monday and blah, blah, blah...".  His response was, "You can do all that tomorrow mommy".

How did he get so smart?  How did I get so Lucky? Seriously, there is always tomorrow and if there is NO tomorrow, do I really want to spend my last evening doing laundry and preparing for a meeting? Of course not! I want to spend my last evening with my family, having fun and getting my butt kicked at Operation!  So, My goal this week is to slow down, take my time and "GET IT".

Of course, somewhere in there, I've got to make the time to practice my Operation skills so that I can take the title from my four year old!  hehe

Amy, I enjoy your posts about learning from our children. Learn a lot now because when he gets to be 13 you won't learn a lot! But at four he's a beautiful genius.

Barbara - Our Children are amazing!

Paul - We learn so much from our children. Hopefully, they will still want to hang with us when they are 16 years old.

Dave - I'm trying not to think about the teenage years...I'm scared!  But, I am definitely soaking it up while I can.

Hi Amy:

Sounds like you had a lot of fun!

I'm always the type to "get it done now and not wait till tomorrow"...

But your son is so right...do it tomorrow works!!!

Amy - I never have this problem because I rarely get any sleep!  Seriously, kids will make us realize that sometimes we forget the "basics" of what is important in life.

Toula - I'm typically one to get things done today, but with Tanner around, I am learning to prioritize.

Gita - Tanner is just starting the video game phase...and already he beats me every time.

Michael - Getting my butt kicked at Operation is so much fun, I do cherish these moments.

Nevin - In Tanner's eyes, the basics are what it's all about. I learn so much from him every day.

Betina - I promise to stop and smell the roses more often...it's nice.

Charles - Actually, I sucked at Operation as a child too!!! LOL

Kate - Kids are brilliant...they certainly know how to get to the heart of a matter!  Isn't it great that they share so much with us?

Amy, since you are my "baby" and now have a child of your own, perhaps you will "Get" this.  In the blink of an eye he will have a new family and you will take a different role in his life.  Oh, you'll always be important and he'll love you and hopefully always be close as you are with me, but it happens before you know it.

Cherish every moment and store them up in your heart for those days when your "baby" is not right there with you.  I think you already "get it" and are prioritizing just the way you should so enjoy!

I love you.  Mom

Smart kid, that son of yours!  We could all take a lesson from him.  Thanks for the reminder to take some time for family.
