Does HUD Owe You a Refund?

By

If you had an FHA-insured mortgage, you may be eligible for a refund from HUD/FHA.

My first home I bought back in 2001, I never realize that I had paid up-front mortgage insurance to purchase my home. I then sold it  in 2004. Just this week I received a letter from a professional tracer notifing me that I had monies owed and that they could help me recover the funds for a fee(29%0. Wow, it was exciting, and I would had never known if they hadn't mailed this letter to me, I almost sign the paperwork to have them recover my money. But then I thought, I am Realtor, I do have access to the internet, I should see what it entails to request a refund. And this is what I found:

Go to  http://www.hud.gov/offices/hsg/comp/refunds/index.cfm

You can do search of their database to find if you are due a refund, if you don't find name don't fret, I just email them to ask if I was owed a refund and reply that mailed me a new application

It generally takes from 14 days to 21 days for the homeowner to receive the application. Normal processing time is approximately 120 days upon receipt of the completed application and supporting documents showing proof of ownership (at time of loan termination).

You do not need to pay another person or firm to assist you in collecting your premium refund or distributive share payment. If you need assistance with this form contact the HUD Support Service Center on 1-(800) 697-6967 or contact us at sf_premiums@hud.gov:

Who may be eligible for an FHA refund or share? Premium Refund: You may be eligible for a refund of a portion of the insurance premium if you:

  • acquired your loan after September 1, 1983
  • paid an up-front mortgage insurance premium at closing and
  • did not default on your mortgage payments.
