3 Ways to Perform Due Diligence In Building Your Twitter Network

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Inner Architect

Twitter strategies abound throughout the Twitterverse where you can find virtually any explanation for how to begin leveraging Twitter. This is a very basic first phase description of how to screen the people and companies that follow you. Due diligence is important, unless you are a spamming hard sell MLM or affiliate marketer, to building an effective network. Let’s examine my due diligence steps with social media analyst Jerimiah Owyang:

3 Due Diligence Steps to Build Your Twitter Network

  1. Read Bio: read the bio of the person-company following you. Understand what they do and if they fit into your network of followers, if they provide information valuable to you, if they have a large network you wish to leverage, and if they are in your industry or niche.

  2. Links: click through the link provided in the bio. This link should lead to a website-blog with mission statements, purpose, goals, industry, and niche. This IS my most important step in the due diligence process.
  3. Tweet “Stream”: read the tweet stream to understand what is being written. Does the person or company provide valuable information to you and your network? Is this person providing new thought leadership like Jeremiah? Do they share techniques or new processes? Do they tweet breaking news about your industry or niche?

Conclusion

It is up to you how you screen your twitter followers and who you will follow in return. I utilized this process 80% of the time. The downside to this process is that it is time consuming. The upside is the fact that you will have a more targeted network that will serve your research, broadcasting, prospecting, sales, networking, announcement, crowdsourcing needs in the future

Hi Dean...I basically do the same thing. I agree it does take time but you end up with a much higher quality follower. I use it in conjunction with the near:"yourcity" command to select local followers.

Dean- If I'm followed and there is no bio, I will not follow back and more than likely block that person.  Big pet peeve for me is not completing a profile at any site...

Bill,

Thanks for sharing! I would suggest only blocking when absolutely necessary. It seems that Twitter pays attention to people you block and if it seems frivolous in their eyes they may respond slower than usual in doing so.

Dean, good point! I also look at their tweets to see what they "rambling" about. I had to block 2 of the real estate agents, who were just unprofessional. You wouldn't believe it what some people can send to fellow professional without even knowing them in person!?... I cannot imagine how they treat their clients.

Irina, I would believe it! I have seen some ugly and stupid behavior on Twitter but that is not exclusive to this network. Just remember to keep performing due diligence and being the best you can be!

Dean,

Thanks for sharing this post. It is important to build your twitter network the RIGHT way. I just read a blog today about "the lazy way to grow your twitter follower count." It's about auto following and why it's such a BAD idea. I posted it on twitter, but here it is again.

I'd love to network with you on twitter as well! You can find me @AgentChristie.

Valuable points to tighten up your platform... they all have different purposes but have a place in the total marketing. Like players in a band, they have to be in tune, in time, working together.
