Last week while doing some ‘Go Green’ reading, I came across an article that sparked some thought,
“Six Surprisingly Comfortable Cave Homes”. Needless to say, I was a bit taken back because the thought of living in a cave doesn’t bring anything remotely close to comfortable to mind. So I clicked on the article and the next thing you know, it was 1 a.m. as what I found had me thinking about what the housing market may turn to and what I would probably be marketing one day. Did you ever think that you would be marketing a finished basement? Well that’s basically what it is right? It’s underground or more lavishly known as ‘Earth Sheltered Housing’ and when you think underground, you think either subway or basement right?
I found benefits that make the idea seem really ‘cool’ and ‘green’ and ‘lively’ and ‘cost effective’. I mean, when I think of what I pay between gas and electric all year and the thought of never having to pay those bills again, I get pictures of me galloping through the mall with the money I saved in my green home. (Of course I know there are more important planetary benefits of conserving energy than shopping sprees but gimme a break, I’m a girl with a shoe fetish ok *wink*) Anywho, I did manage to find a few benefits:
- Protection from fire and natural disasters
- Naturally sound proof living
- Environmental conservation
- Natural heating and cooling
- Cheaper construction costs
Note: Along with these benefits come the questions of moisture which the owners of The Sleeper Cave House seem to have covered with dehumidifiers in which they pulled water from the air with and watered their garden as it says in the article mentioned above.
With the environmental issues, it would seem that this type of living would become more popular in the future. We've seen it in movies: The Matrix, The Fifth Element, and Total Recall to name a few. But I don't think I've ever given thought to the fact that this would be a real life possibility. I've found different. It IS and has been for quite some time. We've never stopped living in caves from what I have found.
Now, I've found alot and I'm definitely still looking but I was so excited that I just had to post about it. More to come as I go deeper into my Cave Living studies. Here's a few things to leave you with and hopefully, you'll go take a look:
- Underground Home Plans for $50.00 and up: Underground Housing
- Dan Price: The Man Who Lives In A Hole: Modern Day Hobbit
- Now how will I ever get a real estate license on Mars?: Mars Homestead Project
- Here's a unique cave listing I found in Arizona: The Cave House
These are just a few. I have to stop myself before I go link crazy. There's indeed ALOT of information that I never knew about. Your thoughts?
