Procrastination Strikes Again!

Darn but I hate it when I put things off just a little too long.

I knew when my computer went haywire a few weeks ago that I needed to find some way to back up emails - but I was so busy trying to deal with getting programs re-installed, and then with trying to make the "repaired" computer work - I didn't do it.

Now I think it's too late. My "real" computer is back at the "fix-it place" and this time I hope they get it right. But it appears that getting it right will mean wiping out everything I had saved. And I had lots of things saved that I did want to keep.

This time, I'm going to make the time to find out how to back up e-mail. There has to be a way. But that's water under the bridge, and I can't do it until I get my computer back.

Now I'm thinking about other things I've been putting off and making a list... I should probably impose some deadlines on myself while I'm at it.

What have you been putting off that you should do now?

Is it something that's going to cost you time and money if you don't tend to it?

Maybe you need to give your website a pick-me-up - or finally install that opt-in box on your short sale page.

Or maybe you need to check your database and make sure you've got all your past clients in there - and check to see that you have new addresses for your sellers.

Perhaps you need to write some letters for your autoresponder, or create your holiday message so you don't end up doing it in a rush at the last minute.

Or maybe you should take an hour or so right now and put together a Thanksgiving message to send to everyone on your list.

We all have a list of tasks that are "important but not urgent."  We put them off because, in all likelihood, they're tasks we don't especially like doing. It's easy to replace them with "urgent but not important" or even "not urgent and not important" tasks. Anything to keep ourselves busy so we don't have to get over there and do the things that aren't fun.

If you have a list like that there are only 2 ways to get rid of it. Either jump in and just do it, or delegate.

Either way, you'll feel better when you mark it off the list.

That said, I'll help you mark off one task - writing a letter to first time buyers. I already wrote one that you are welcome to use, and all you have to do to get it is ask. You'll find the box at www.copybymarte.com/firsttimebuyer.html

Here's to lots of year-end sales!

I have been procrastinating. I need to redo my AR profile and FB business page.

I desperately need to back up my laptop. And the screen is about to GO. I know that the only outcome to this path is a bad one unless I step up and do something. OK...must now add this to my to do list so I don't end up hating myself later. I really appreciate this post, and I know others need a reminder as well. Especially as holidays approach it gets even harder to just maintain the necesseties.

Thanks everyone - for all the great suggestions. When I get my computer back I'll check them all out and figure out a good solution.

Maybe because the computer was sick, Outlook caused a lot of problems, so I was using outlook express - it doesn't have as many functions. (I've always wondered why the one with less was called "express.") Oh well.

Also wondering if I could train myself to use gmail. I tend not to use things on line because of the speed - with a satellite connection it takes so long to get somewhere that I sometimes forget why I wanted to go there!

I'm thinking about switching back to Wild Blue from Hughes Net - the salesman says its now faster. Anyone have experience with that?

Now to figure out what I CAN do while I wait...

I haven't bought my turkey for Thanksgiving yet.  How's that for procrastination!   Does that say anything about what I really want to do on Thursday?

I'm putting off the things on my "to do" list by playing around in the Rain here!  Guess I better get to work. It's still only Tuesday.

Kim - do it today! I knew my "repaired" computer wasn't really repaired, and instead of doing that I kept fooling with it, trying to make it work.

I agree with Tim - procrastination IS a way to find out what we don't like to do - and I don't like to do anything that is remotely "techie." My brain scrambles and making myself concentrate is torture. But I should have done it anyway.

Linda - you'd better do that today too, unless you want to spend extra $$ to buy a fresh turkey. It takes a couple of days for those big chunks to thaw, you know! I'm with you - would rather not spend all day Thursday cooking just so I can spend all evening cleaning the kitchen.

But... Seems like the things we get done are the ones that other people are expecting us to do.

Linda - Yes, its still only Tuesday, and yet a lot of the people you need to talk to are probably already gone for the holiday. One of my clients left last week! Makes it a good time to catch up on some of those other chores - the boring ones like data entry.

But I agree, Playing in the Rain is a LOT more fun!

I am in the club just like everyone else is.  My list is too long to even think about.  I try to organize my in box at least weekly and move important emails to their folders and delete all the junk.  I usually do this when I am watching TV, which is rare.

Backing up to a virtual site would be the best.  Heaven forbid you do an external backup and something tragic happens to your office.  It's best if it is off the premises.

All I want for Christmas is time management!

Jayne - I don't watch TV much either - only when my son is visiting and I want to keep him company while he sleeps on the couch! Mostly I listen to it while cooking dinner.

So, since I do have a couple of friends and children I like to talk to, I do some of those "no thinking" tasks while I'm talking on the phone. Don't have to pay attention to hit the delete button!

Marte- because procrastination is my middle name (unless I really want to do something!), I use Carbonite to automatically back everything up; love post-it notes to make daily lists and am never caught up.  I am nothing if not a list maker!

If you backup to an online backup service, you should ensure that you backup to multiple companies since any of them could go out of business and you won't have any backups in such a situation.

Use G Mail all your emails are saved on their servers not your computer. You can create files for every Transaction on their system. I save nothing to my computer any more everything is saved on some web site somewhere. All my contracts are written using the real fast on line system, all photos are saved at Photoworks.com why would you save any thing on your computer?

I like the prioritizing aspect of our business...if you don't you will find that the critical stuff falls through the cracks...generally the critical stuff is what we don't want to do...so like they say...it's like eating a frog, if that is the worst thing you have to do all day, your day can only get better from there!

I need to do the same thing.  I finally lost my old computer and I am so grateful that I backed up everything.  It's made it a much smoother transition to a new computer!

Good advice on something that affects about everybody sooner or later. that backup thing never seems important until it is too late. I have heard that Carbonite is a great inexpensive service for unlimited b ackup.

Thanks everyone, for more good ideas.

I agree, we all need to learn to "eat that frog" and we'd probably be happier by the end of the day. The trouble comes when you're too busy to even eat - let alone eat the frog!

(But that's a good trouble, right?)
