Pick 3. Spend 50. Save your Local Economy...The 3/50 project

By
Real Estate Agent with Surterre Properties

PLEASE, support YOUR local economy!

The idea is to commit $50 each month to locally owned businesses. Maybe that means rethinking where you currently invest your money, opting to pick up that birthday card or pair of jeans in a locally owned business instead of the big box you’ve been going to. Or maybe it means eating out once a month because you realize slamming the brakes on all spending stalls economic recovery. And it means not shopping online, 99.99999% of online sales generate nothing for the community you live in. It’s just that simple.

Love the post Michael, for over 20 years I have said that one particular World-wide retailer that claims to have the lowest prices anywhere is EVIL because of all the people they put out of business!!!

Hi Michael - Really interesting.  Unfortunately, I HATE to shop, and shopping online is available late at night and in the wee hours of the morning, which are the times I have available, so that is where I will probably always do the majority of my shopping.  I do spend a little here and there in some small stores though (but probably not $50 a mnth).

Michael,

I'll have to pass along that web address.  That's a great idea and it looks like it would make a big difference.

Michael,

I often meet client and potential clients at a locally owned coffee establishment. Like many coffee houses, if I can use that term, that a part of a national chain, this place offers wireless internet, good coffee, delicious pastries, tables where you can meet and talk business. They also offer soups and hand-made sandwiches. It is a great place to meet with real estate clients, set up my laptop and poor over listings, review market information and prepare to set off to look at houses.

A bonus...the money I spend goes to a local business and stays in my community.

GREAT, Michael! I'm a big supporter of local vendors and suppliers, and would choose to antique shop or buy from a local business than a big chain any day. What a great explanation of an easy way we can do our part within our own communities and make a difference.

Michael,  I have always tried to support local businesses and I think your concept of pick 3 and spend 50 is excellent.  I saw this on Ashley's re-blog and I plan on re-blogging it too.

Hi Michael -- I missed this original post, but just read's a re-blog of it. I agree with you 100%. Our vibrant downtown draws people to San Carlos, and it's important to help keep it that way. Besides, it's fun to get to know our local business owners.
