Here is an Idea to Run an Effective Government

Why do we keep electing officials who have no ideas to solve the problems we face?  It seems many of our elected officials know nothing about balancing a budget.  We continue to elect and reelect the same people with the exact same qualities, or lack thereof.

I propose we fashion a test.  Before a person is allowed to run for any public office they must first prove they can manage money.  If they can survive for one year on an income of $25,000, they qualify for public office.  They can live any where they choose.  The $25,000 must pay for their families housing, transportation, food, clothing, education and medical coverage.

This will give our elected officials the experience of seeing how the average person lives.  This should force them to think before raising taxes when the economy sours.

Imagine what the average family faces.  Prices rise, government falls short of cash, so they increase taxes.  They charge another $25 to license your car.   Another $1 to fill the tank.  Another $2 to shop for clothes.  Another $2 to use the phone.  $5 a month more to heat the house will not effect too many people.  Just before Christmas, when the shopping is done and the money is spent we can send them a property tax bill to let them know the city's  Christmas bonus is $400.  At the end of the year when winter has set is we will let them know they owe an extra $200 on income taxes.

Do our elected official have enough sense to total up the extra taxes the average family must pay?

Hi Dennis.  Yes, we do keep re-electing the same people. Truth is everybody complains about congress yet 95% of incumbents get re-elected every election.  Why?  Because everybody believes that their representative is not the problem.  It's the proud parent syndrome.

My proposal would be this.  If you are going to hold ANY public office you must divest of all your investment holdings.  The only investments you would be able to hold while in office are U.S. Treasury notes, or Municipal Bonds.

In addition to the divesture measure, campaign contributions would be limited to $150 a person and would only be valid if coming from a 9 digit social security number.  No corporate donations.  The government would by air space on television and radio for candidates to run commercials.  This would even the playing field and make sure that our elected officials are not persuaded by big business instead of their local constituents.  THEN you would see balanced budgets.

Best of luck to you.

Jeff

Are you implying 3rd parties would be able to have a piece pf the air time?  That would be great.

I like the idea of having public officials invest in the governement they are paid to run.  But we tried that with businesses.  It didn't work.  Companues borrowed money to pay their CEOs who are oaid by stocks.  I wish they could fix that problem.

Dennis, many of the politicians have never even earned a nickel from a legitimate job! They've figured out how to always be on the receiving end of public (taxpayer) dollars.
