I left home at 5:55AM for my run/walk. It was pretty cold for San Antonio, but I was dressed for the occassion and I knew that after getting warmed up, I would not think about the weather.
This morning, I passed The Vineyard Shopping Center . The parking lot is usually pretty empty except for the workers at the Super Target who do the night stocking. Today was different. The lot was full of cars. Conn's had a line of people outside waiting to get in. I just saw their website that described a 2-Day Sale, that was described as a Door Buster from 6AM-10AM. Since there were people in the store too, I assume they were restricting the number of people allowed in the store at any one time to avoid the stampede that occurs at some of these early morning sales events.
Office Depot was also open, but there was no line waiting for entry. I guess discounts or sales for office furniture, pens, or file folders just doesn't get people up at 6AM for discounted items.
Target was also open. It's a Super Target and it was super packed. They must have had some great sales items too.
Our economic well-being is based partially on how people feel about their current situation and prospects for the future. I know you can't take one day and make solid projections about the future. However, I take this as a good sign that, in San Antonio, this may not be the worst economy since the Depression.
