People Like Experts! :)

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Turn-Key Properties LLC, Missouri and Kansas Real Estate

I have an old friend, he is one of those people who is always a wealth information and advice, often leaving you to wonder why he doesn't take some of his own advice.

He spends hours reading about successful people and how they became successful. Lists, books, blogs, articles, he can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about successful people.

So once in a while he utters something that makes sense, like "People Like Experts"!Becoming an Expert

He was telling me that just a few weeks ago, and I laughed because so many people claiming to be "experts" are really just people who haven't been very successful, so they tout themselves as experts to sell books or get invited to speak to groups.

When someone really is an expert it shows in their knowledge and in what they say and write.

Recently I have been selected (hired) by www.examiner.com to be the Kansas City Real Estate Examiner. So does that make me an expert? No!

That in and of itself is a great honor, and a great opportunity to market myself and my real estate company. It also gives me a chance to make a few bucks blogging about what I know; Real Estate!

What hopefully makes me an expert in someones eyes is the content of my articles and the honesty, accuracy and information I post. I'm not ready to call myself an expert, that is for you to decide, in my mind an expert is recognized by his or her peers as an expert, not just labels themselves as one.

I also volunteer to answer questions for people at sites like allexperts.com here is one of my profiles there. http://www.allexperts.com/ep/2151-90219/Residential-Property-Management/Ben-Edsall.htm

I've earned many certifications, accreditation's and awards... So I guess that makes me an expert at those things; or does it. Somehow I just don't feel right calling myself an expert, because ultimately there is always someone out there who knows more than me about any given subject.

There is of course nothing wrong with shameless self-promotion, but expert... I'll let you decide.

You reminded me of something I heard long ago.

A high school professor once told me, "I'll tell you what an expert is. Let's break it down, shall we? You over there, tell me what the "EX" part means. That's correct, something that is past tense, something that once was, but is no more. And you, in the back row, tell me what the last part PERT means? He looked at the class with a glint of humor in his eye and pressed his two fingers together to indicate a tiny little imaginary object. "Pert is something small, perhaps very small. So small that it is insignificant, and means nothing to nobody. So now you know what someone who describes himself or herself as an EX-PERT truly is."

I know, the guy was pretty rough on us kids! By the way, he never gave out any A's in his class because he said that none of us were experts enough to get one. I loved that teacher. He had a military buzzcut and smelled of Camel cigarettes and coffee and was not afraid to tell us what he felt about any given subject.

Thanks for a great post that took me down memory lane! Have a fun and profitable Wednesday!
