Use your retirement account to invest in real estate

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeTowne Realty

I am currently enrolled in classes to obtain my GRI designation (Graduate Realtor Institute).  One of my classes was on tax planning.  I learned a lot about self directed IRA's.  A lot of people have large retirement accounts and are tired of having all of their money in the ups and downs of the stock market.  Retirement accounts can own real estate but probably not with the current company you are using.  There are companies that specialize in real estate IRA's such as Entrust (www.entrustadmin.com), Lincoln Trust (www.lincolntrust.com), and Sterling Trust (www.sterling-trust.com).  Of course, there are a lot of rules and regs concerning these investments but I think it is definitely worth looking into.  I own investment real estate and it has been more stable than the stock market in recent years.  Visit my teachers website at www.tomlundstedt.com for more info on using your retirement account to invest in real estate.   Call me when you are ready to buy in the Raleigh, NC area!

I agree with that 100%. In fact, I am in favor of cashing out the equity ( to a point) in your primary residence to invest in additional real estate. For example, if you have $500k in your 401k, your monthly income from that will be far less than what you could earn if you had full ownership in a 4 family building worth $500k. In addition, you can begin earning that money well before retirement age.

Good opportunities out there, if you don't risk a lot.

Nicole, thanks for the info!  It's much better to have your money in real estate than the stock market, that's for sure!

Thanks for sharing what you've learned in your GRI tax classes with us, Nicole! Those are good alternatives for people to consider who are in that situation. :)

After Sept.11 and the stock market fall, I took my retirement funds and invested them in what I know....real estate.  It wasn't a mistake.  I bought 2 properties in my hometown in texas since I have family there to help me manage them.  Both have doubled in value which would not have happened in the stock market.  It's important that you choose carefully when investing in real estate.
