Bloomin' Cypress!

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty RED STICK PARTNERS

One of the most colorful Fall trees in this area, the cypress turns this shade of rusty copper before all of its feathery leaves fall off.  Just adding to its beauty, a nearby Senna tree has grown up into the canopy of the cypress, adding a bright spike of yellow blooms to highlight the coppery colors.  There is something extra special about two trees in one and the amazing affects that come from the combination.

The Senna (previously known as Cassia) is a very large genus with about 500 species.  While they can grow up to 30 feet, as this Christmas Senna has done, they can be pruned and trained as smaller trees.  When other trees, like the Crape Myrtles are losing their blooms and leaves, this evergreen is just winding up.  It will bloom from August until the first frost with beautiful yellow orchid-like flowers that are attractive to bees and sulphur butterflies.  However, if left unattended it can be very invasive and grow into parts of a house.

The blossoms on the Senna are lovely.  I'm not familiar with that tree - I wonder if it would grow where I live?

Kate, the senna plant will become a tree in zones 9-11.  It looks like NC is mostly in zones 7 and 8.  It would probably grow, but maybe not into a tree and might not bloom as prolifically.  It might do best in zone 8 closer to the coast.  If you experiment, let us know how it works out.  Thanks for stopping by, and have a great week.

When you think of Real Estate, think of me!

Thanks for sharing the great pictures  of the Senna tree, I live in Zone 7 so I don't think it would do well here, considering we just had over 18" of snow and drifts of 5 feet. Makes me want to do anywhre it's warm. Barbara

Hi Barbara, Mardi Gras is next week ... still time to fly south like a bird :-) I know what you mean about the snow.  When my husband was complaining about our 40 degree weather yesterday, I reminded him that it could be so much worse if we had a lot of snow to deal with.  However ... we just might get some flurries on Friday.  Flurries I can handle.
