California waste board attracts political heat

Real Estate Agent with Weichert Realtors

One in an occasional series examining government spending as California copes with recession.

To its defenders, the California Integrated Waste Management Board is a national leader in protecting the environment by increasing recycling and reducing the glut of garbage in landfills.

Its detractors call it a high-salaried recycling bin for termed-out politicians and political insiders.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who has yet to blow up many bureaucratic boxes, wants legislative approval to junk the waste board and the $132,178 annual salaries for its six appointed members.

His proposal comes barely two months after Schwarzenegger and the Legislature appointed termed-out lawmakers Carole Migden, Sheila Kuehl and John Laird to the board.

The plan would eliminate a perch for political appointees reaping sweet pay and benefits for duties that government watchdogs say could be done on a half-time basis or less.
