Life in Huntsville, Texas ...I'm new here!

I've officially been here full time since October 24, 2009 (off and on before that)...and I'm pleased to say that I've really fallen in love with this area. It isn't just the openness of it, the trees and natural surroundings I now live in but mostly it's the people.

Huntsville, Texas has some of the friendliest people I've ever met.  As I drive down the road people who can't possibly know me wave as we pass.  In the stores, especially the grocery store, people talk to you as if you were an old friend.  I am sure part of that is because I am open to it and possibly project that subconciously but mostly it's just because everyone here is nice and friendly..well, everyone I've met so far.  I'm no Pollyanna so I do realize there are not so friendly people everywhere!

This area is really rural relative to San Jose, CA where I recently moved from after living there 33 years. I do admit I've had to make some adjustments. I live about 16 miles outside Huntsville and the grocery store isn't just a few blocks away.  There is a definate lack of shopping and major stores that are proximate.  I think most of the major shopping areas are all 45 minutes away...that was a bit of a shock and not that easy to get used to.  I have become much better at planning and list making as a result...and online shopping is moving up in importance.

That said, I do not miss the traffic..not in any way, shape or form!  To go from 4 to 6 lanes of stop and go, bumper to bumper to 1 to 2 lanes in each direction with times when you never see a car has been a constant source of amazement to me....a wonderful experience to be sure.  One of the first photos I received of the area was taken from Rick's office window..one lane and one car...he said it was the freeway.  I looked at the photo and asked him...is that someone's driveway..smile...where are the cars? Where are the lanes?  Now that I am here I can truly appreciate the beauty of it...that isn't to say the area doesn't have some traffic..it does and at times it can be heavy but nothing like what I'd grown to hate so  much.

I am looking forward to appraisal work here in Huntsville and the surrounding areas.  There is a definite lack of cookie cutter type homes which makes an appraisers job easy but a little dull at times.  It will be exciting to start inspecting these custom and semi-custom homes here.  Again, I know it will be nice  because the people are so friendly.

Thank you, Huntsville!

Hi Alisa,

Welcome to Texas and I'm glad you are enjoying life here.  I moved to Texas from the UK 2 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I can certainly relate to a lot of what you say in particular the need to plan your shopping.  The people are certainly very friendly and the whole quality of my life has improved no end!

If you ever come close to Austin please feel free to come on by and say hello.

Steve

HI Steve,

Thanks for the kind offer! I just love Austin.  About 20 years ago I came close to moving to the Austin area..Pflugerville, actually.  Nachos and salsa at that resturant by the lake was great!  Your area is certainly beautiful too...although I've heard your traffic has grown considerably..! IS that so?

Happy Holidays to you and yours!
