Just a short drive northeast of Athens, Ga, along U.S. Highway 29, sits the small town of Danielsville, Ga. Founded in 1817, Danielsville is the county seat for Madison County.

Danielsville is named after General Allen Daniel, an officer of the militia, who also served as captain in the Revolutionary War. The original public buildings in the town were built on land provided by General Daniel. It's historic courthouse (which is no longer in use as a courthouse) was built in 1901 and is on the national register of historic buildings. The courthouse sits on a square in the center of town, dividing the north-south lanes of higway 29

On the grounds surrounding the courthouse a statue of Dr. Crawford W. Long can be found. Dr. Long introduced the use of ether as an anesthetic during surgery, one the the major medical advances in history. Also on the grounds is the Madison County Veterans Garden, where there are brick pavers bearing the names of Madison County Veterans that sacrificed their lives for the U.S., from the revolution through the current wars in Iraq & Afghanistan.
