Is your business model working?

As winter approaches here in the beautiful state of Minnesota, I have been taking my extra time to attend some seminars to see what people are saying about being successful in today's market.  I've heard some people talk about a customer service approach.  I've also heard speeches on sales tactics.  After attending a few of these classes, I've learned a few things.

First, you need to find which style of sales fits your personality, beliefs, etc.  I originally started out being offended by some of the sales techniques being taught in one of the classes.  I thought, "This is nothing more than a 'bait and switch' tactic that makes Realtors look like used car salesman.  But then it was later brought to my attention that whether I agree with it or not, it works!  Sure enough I watched a couple agents in my office using this technique and they went from little business to lots.  So while this is not a business approach I am comfortable with, if it works, who am I to knock it?

Second,  I've learned that there are actually a large number of different business plans.  But the one the works the best is the one you implement.  Any number of plans can be successful, but if your not working it, how can it be successful.  In every seminar the speaker has said, "If you fail to plan, plan to fail."  it's catchy, easy to remember, and most importantly, very true.  The best business plan is the one you use.

Lastly, don't waste time and money on trying to reinvent the wheel.  I don't mean to burst any ones bubble, but there have been plenty of business people before us who have already laid the groundwork on how to be successful.  I will admit this is one area where I faltered when I started in the business.  I kept telling myself I was going to be original and do what no one else has done before.  Well I went through a lot of marketing dollars learning what didn't work instead of just listening to those who already figured it out!

So to summarize, there are a lot of great ideas out there being taught on a regular basis.  But what's most important is that you pick a style that best fits you, make sure you work it on a regular basis, and use the techniques that are already available.  These are the keys to a successful business model!
