How Not To Dress for Success!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Joan Bergstrom Mobile Notary

I refinanced a couple of months ago and the company called me and said the Rider wasn't sent with Deed Of Trust to the county recorder and they needed to send out new docs and the notary would call me.

He called and we set an appt  for today and he is the second notary who is absolutely clueless as what to wear.

This notary was about 25-28 years old and wore a work shirt, blue jeans and open toed sandals. He was on his second term as a notary. He also walked in without a briefcase and only his  journal and fingerprinting device in his hand. He didn't have a briefcase but walked in with the worst looking notary journal I have seen; I am sure it is just tossed in the trunk.

He knew I was a notary because he called my home phone and the info says to be forwarded to my cell.
I asked if he was a loan signer and he said he got a lot of business in 2001-2003 but not much lately. Duh!
The other notary 2 years ago arrived in sweat shirt, jeans and tennis shoes, 3 hours late and was in the same age group. She told me it took her over 2 hours to get a loan signed. Another Duh!

This guy was completely clueless why he wasn't getting hired and his appearance sealed his faith.
I am still busy all time and its nice to have competition in CA like this notary.

The other notary 2 years ago was dressed the same but she compounded her problem by being 3 hours late!

I don't think loan officers really understand that the appearance of a notary (the only person a borrower's sees in person can make or break a successful signing)

I am going to call the  company that sent him and tell them they are not doing himself a favor by sending out a an unprofessional notary.  Our image as notaries cannot be left as retired people or bored housewives/etc.

Yes, it's always important to dress professionally. You're representing the company and you never know if the loan officer will decide to show up to the signing. I've had this happen at least a few times.

How is anyone going to take you seriously if you don't take yourself seriously.

Not only can the loan officer be in attendance but many companies call the borrower to ask what the notary was wearing.  It's a big issue in our industry.

Men need to wear a collard shirt, slacks, and dress shoes.

Women: slacks, skirt, blouse, dress shoes.

Do not wear: jeans, cutoffs, flip flops, warm-ups, shorts, tank tops, tee shirts.

Dress like a professional and you have a better chance of being treated as a professional.

We are the impression to the borrower of the mortgage broker, title company, and everyone else associated with this loan - INCLUDING OURSELVES!  We should be professional in every aspect if we are going to get the respect of title & signing companies!
