When it comes to colors, we cannot be arrogant

By
Home Stager

Some Home Stagers have a style they bring to every house.  Some other operate as decorators, using an artistic aproach, that is different with each listing.  While the pluses and minuses to these styles are clear, I prefer to utilize a mixture of art meets conformity.  I call it "decorative neutrality"  While Feng Shui dictates certain colors are better than others, all aspects of a listing must be considered when choosing accent colors.

A few of them are (but not limited to):

Tones of wood and floors

Season (time of years)

Amount of light

Geographical location (beachy theme might look rather inappropriate in a foresty setting)

Furniture Appearance (assuming it not a vacant house, and you do not have control over the furniture)

I agree that the listing has to dictate the style.  I like the variety--keeps things interesting.

I rent the large upholstered pieces that I use and thusly my options are limited. Unfortunately I have to use the same stuff over and over due to having only ONE rental company at my disposal. However, we all must use our creative juices in our work! I know that it's the little things that make each job ( home) unique,, That's what we know how to do and what we are paid to do!

Give the architecture due respect if it is a selling point. If the spaces are just ordinary, we must give them character.  It's also keeping in mind the "less is more" philosophy.  My husband who has a fine art background has oft repeated the phrase.. " A good artist knows when to quit".

In the area where I work, many Realtors and home sellers as well, still think of staging as decorating.. They imagine overly furnished "fancy" rooms. Brocade draperies and bedding, huge fake flowers arrangements on the dining table that is set with crystal and china.. etc.

Still a lot of educating to do,,  (sigh...)

I have had the same thought when decorators or stagers say that they always recommend certain paint colors.  There are SO many things in a house to check - cabinet colors, carpet, etc, that I'm always finding new "perfect" colors.
