Mail Tribune - Man On A Soapbox! - Medford Oregon
Why do you suppose that with newspapers going out of business at an alarming rate that an editor would deliberately alienate a large percentage of his remaining readership?
For months now I've been following the fight by Medford Oregon's Bob Hunter (Man On A Soapbox) of the Mail Tribune with the Jackson County Sheriffs office. Mr. Hunter is demanding the right to publish in his paper the names of all citizens who legally possess a concealed weapons license.
He states that this should be public information and wants to reveal these peoples' identities. Why?
All of these licensees paid handsomely for the license and went through extensive state and federal background checks. They do not have any criminal records, so why the fervor to tell the criminals the names of those likely to have firearms in their homes? This is information that must remain confidential!
I would hope that if I were in trouble that there would be someone nearby that was legally carrying a handgun to come to my assistance!
Thank goodness the Jackson County Sheriff has the decency and resolve to stand up against the tyranny of this Man On A Soapbox.
Do you suppose this paper hopes to save its' declining subscriber base by turning into a sensationalist rag? What would be next? Publishing lists of people who lose their jobs, to rub salt in their wounds? To monitor purchasers of cigarettes and alcohol, and report that in the paper?
Maybe Bob Hunter should go to work for Michael Bloomberg in New York or move his Man On A Soapbox act to Chicago!
When newspapers start taking liberties with the privacy of law abiding citizens, then maybe they should go away.
Bob Hunter; get a life!
