The City of Mesa Library was spotlighted by the Federal Depository Library Program for their outstanding efforts to create a visible and usable depository collection.  There are over 1,250 libraries nationwide that participate in the Federal Depository Library Program, which provides the public access to information from the Federal Government.  For the month of December, the Mesa Public Library Depository was profiled and featured on the Federal Depository Library Program's website.

"It was very exciting to learn that Mesa Public Library had been selected from over 1,000 libraries as the spotlight Depository Library for December," Mesa Library Director Heather Wolf said. "I want to thank Sandy Rizzo and Denise Shroyer for their dedication in making these important government resources accessible to the citizens of Mesa.  It is because of their passion and the many unique and creative marketing techniques they employ that Mesa was spotlighted."

Through their efforts, the library has integrated government materials into the library catalog, government periodicals into the magazine area and Spanish-language materials into the Spanish collection, making it easier for patrons to access government information.  Also, they have created fun and interesting displays to bring attention to government information like the 2010 Census, Voting in America, and details about invasive plant species.  The Depository staff members are library employees who handle this area in addition to their other library responsibilities.

"We feel honored to be recognized by the Government Printing Office and Federal Depository Library Program." Mesa Library Depository and Business Librarian Sandy Rizzo said.  "We've tried hard to promote government information for our citizens, and we enjoy making our Depository the best it can be."

About the Federal Depository Library Program

The Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) was established by Congress to ensure that the American public has access to its Government's information. Since 1813, depository libraries have safeguarded the public's right to know by collecting, organizing, maintaining, preserving, and assisting users with information from the Federal Government. The FDLP provides Government information at no cost to designated depository libraries throughout the country and territories. These depository libraries, in turn, provide local, no-fee access to government information in an impartial environment with professional assistance.  As institutions committed to equity of access and dedicated to free and unrestricted public use, the nation's nearly 1,250 depository libraries serve as one of the vital links between "We the people" and our government. Anyone can visit Federal depository libraries and use the Federal depository collections which are filled with information on careers, business opportunities, consumer information, health and nutrition, legal and regulatory information, demographics, and numerous other subjects.
