In April the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California announced that water deliveries to their member agencies will be starting on July 1, 2009. For the City of Poway these implications meant a reduction in overall water consumption by 8% or else residents and businesses would have faced significant penalties and restrictive measures.
Even though 2 years ago Powegians have reduced water consumption in an effort to solve the permanent water shortage problem, there is still a way to go. The City of Poway and San Diego region are exploring options to diversify the water supply.
How will this affect Poway Home Owners?
For Poway Homeowners one of the solutions may be to implement gray water system. In essence, this means to reuse laundry and bathing water for landscape irrigation.
Even though less than 3 # of overall water use in Poway is for City parks and the Poway School District, landscape maintenance districts and City facilities will have to review their irrigation systems.
How will Poway Home Owners be able to save water?
For Homeowners long term changes such as modifying irrigation systems, adjusting irrigation run-times to avoiding oversaturation will be the best option. In addition, a shift to water-wise landscaping will help reduce daily water usage.
Will Poway Homeowners have to transform their backyards like the ones we commonly see in Scottsdale, Arizona?
For Poway Realtors, this means that increased water costs and changing landscapes may alter the perception of a "green and affordable living".
For those who are interested in some hints, the City's Water Conservation Team offers useful resources to assist Poway residents and businesses with this new water reality.
