Aggressive Or Passive?

Aggressive Or Passive?

One always wonders how much is too much when it comes to being an aggressive salesperson, but to not come across as being pushy.

Naturally, we must be concerned with coming on "too strong" but also, we need to be concerned with not being strong enough to be convincing.

A lot of Realtors have always impressed me with being more laid-back and non-aggressive, but maybe that goes with the territory.  I'll find out as I go.

Anyone working in a retail store however, especially just before Christmas, had better be focused and on the ball!

My wife and I have decided to purchase a new flat screen T.V.  We stopped at a local big box store last week and pretty much settled on a 46" Samsung model 650 after looking at all of the different makes.

Since we live in a small city, we value trying to keep more money in our local economy, so we decided that before making the purchase, we would compare with the one large independently owned T.V. store here.  They specialize in Sony and advertise a lot, so we thought we'd give them a chance to sell us against the Samsung.

When we stopped in we noticed about four employees behind the camera counter and we walked into the television display department.  There was only one other couple in the store and they were looking at a home entertainment center in the T.V. area.

We looked at the various displays, but the specifications such as contrast ratio, Hz's, etc. weren't displayed on several of the 46" models.  We waited around for about 15 minutes and finally decided to leave.  One the way toward the door, I stopped to look at an SLR camera outfit, which I am also in the market for, and as we turned to go, the T.V. salesman was saying goodbye to his customers and acknowledged us as he walked by.  He said, "did you need help?"

Since we had pretty much ruled out doing business here at all, I figured that I would give them a chance to earn our business, so I answered, "we came in to compare the 46" Sony to another set we are considering."  Without hardly slowing down in his pace, he said "well, if you think of any questions, feel free to ask," and he strode over to join his fellow salesmen standing around the office.

I feel sorry for the owner of this business, but I will not spend $1,400 + with someone who won't make an effort to "sell me."  I'll also purchase the camera elsewhere.

Having been in the retail business for the last 30 years, I have one very plain philosophy for a store selling a product; "People only come in to a business for three reasons:

  1. to use the phone
  2. to use the bathroom
  3. to buy something

Therefore, If there is someone in your store and they are not on the phone, or not in the bathroom, sell them something!"

For the most part, retail stores have one chance to earn someones' business.  People may leave and come back if they are well served, but if they aren't, there are too many other options out there.

I prefer a sales person to offer knowledgable assistance, and to be able to answer specific technical questions.  However when they come on too strong, it tends to push me the other way.  I like to gather the info on the product and make up my own mind.

When you said you wanted to compare the 46" Sony, that was the salesman's opportunity to explain the differences between the TVs.  When he said to let him know if you had any questions I guess he missed it:  That was your question!

Wow  - there is nothing more insulting that being ignored.  The last TV I purchased was at Wal-Mart.  The salesman was a master - asking it how much I would watch, what I would watch, etc.  I recruited him to sell real esate!

This is just the reason that I don't frequent Best Buy if I can help it.  Their salespeople couldn't sell space heaters north of the Arctic Circle if their lives depended on it!

Unfortunately, small retailers all over America are falling by the wayside because of the competition both from pricing and variety offered by the big box retailers. The few survivors are those stores which provide excellent customer service as well as competitive pricing.  This requires a "top down" management  philosophy.  If the owners are not training their employees properly and there isn't an expectation for "full service" they will not be able to continue to operate.  We are all less fortunate as a result.  While saving a few bucks today,  the homogenization of American retailers will eventually lead to less competition and higher prices.

Thanks to everyone who responded.  I guess being in real estate magnifies the situation more than it does when looking at a T.V. set.  The dollars are a lot greater and have much more impact on us if we don't treat someone properly.

Hi Gary,

Real estate is the same way.  You should be focused and on the ball!  Otherwise you could be out of the game.

Actually, I like it when they ask if I need anything, I say no, then they go away till I flag them down. If they try to "sell" me anything, I am out of there! I want information, not pressure.

Gary, makes you wonder how many times, we as agents, didn't pursue the sale enough?  I probably prefer to be too aggressive than too passive.

Hi Gary -- Retail is a nasty business and that owner needs to manage their store better.  I don't blame you, I wouldn't give them my money either.

It is too bad that those sales people were not "hungry" enough to try to sell you something.

I remember the days when the sales staff in most department stores worked on commission. The guys that sold  appliances and tires at sears could support a family and send their kids to college on what they made. Of course you got good service; they knew their product and knew the competition. Unfortunately those days are gone. Today you find what you want and bring it to the counter where an hourly worker takes your money. There are no more "salesmen" in retail

I wouldnt  compare what we do with retail sales at least not with the way its done today

By the way, I wouldnt say being "laid-back and non-aggressive" means you cant be "on the ball" or convincing"  Speaking only for myself; If I have the choice between two salesmen, both of whom take the time to learn my needs and wants and both of whom know their market and  product; Ill go with the laid back guy every time.....I hope Im right, Im betting my financial life on it.

Very true, I have ended up buying camera's and lap tops from the store where the person gave me time and attention. They were engaging me and trying to help.

Even if was cheaper elsewhere I bought where I felt they cared.

Gary,  There is definitely a  balance in how to act in sales.  It is so sad when folks you are trying to give business to aren't interested in working with you.  There's a lot to be said about useful/helpful sales people.  We bought a car and computer from the businesses that helped us the most, as I was "willing to pay for the help!"  All the best, Michelle

This type of experience can be aggravating.  Sometimes I just want to look and don't want to be harassed.  However, when I want help and questions answered, I want them now not later, especially if people are standing around chatting with other employees, not customers.

Thus the difference between sales and order-taking.  I don't do aggressive or passive...I do helpful!  Great post.

Thank you everyone for your great feedback.  I'm still surprised customer service at a small locally-owned store was so disappointing.

I thank it was a great read, But I see it everday with Real Estate agents, Agents have forgotten how to sell. You have to close, those standing behind the counter is no diffrent than the agent that shows 50 houses to one person. Figure out what the customer needs are and SELL it to them.
