My Social Media Marketing Strategy - Dec 2009

By

I've VERY recently been bombarded by offerings of Social Media Marketing Seminars, Webinars and Courses.

Normally I take a bit more time this part of the year to 'play' on the computer and try to get current on trends in technology.

Yesterday I signed up for Ross Hair's Social Media Marketing Webinar and spent 3 hours listening to how awesome life would be if I was one of his students.

After listening to this webinar I considered paying the $500 fee to join the 6 training sessions.

However ... after a nights sleep ... I think I'll just continue prodding along ... updating my "STATUSES" whenever I think of it ... or have time ... or think that someone might care that:

-I'm hanging the Christmas lights;

-Have interest in local MLS data.

-At my childrens music recital.

-I have a great new listing

-Just swam, ran, skiied, or biked.  (Below picture is gaughter and I on Tandem on our 3rd annual May Golden Triangle Tour ... 330 km in 3 days in the Rocky Mountains. We LOVE it.)

My Social Marketing Media Strategy:

1. Add friends when I have time ... or feel like it.My daughter and I cycling the Golden Triangle May 2009

2. Don't try to sell or build REAL relationships on Social networks.

3. Build my close relationships outside of the social networks.

In the year or so that I've been experimenting with Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and Active Rain I've enjoyed:

  • connecting with old friends and long lost relatives;
  • staying better connected to new friends;
  • getting my news from Twitter. (I actually get only 2 updates on my cell phone from two people. I realized recently that this is where I get MOST of my news!  ... this is embarrassing ... but true.)
  • getting two deals that I can contribute to my 'status updates' as I was 'top  of mind' when my 'friends' needed to make a real estate decision.

What's your Social Media Marketing Strategy?

Bryon:

I am in the baby step stage, I like you have been SOLD so many social media packages, lately that I walk out from the seminar or webinars wondering if these approaches are so wildy successful WHY,  is all this pressure to buy now or the offer is going bye, bye.

I like Tom Ferry's social media program and I am considering getting in involved with it after the first of the year. It not cheap it runs about $1500.

I think you are partly on the right track but I am doing the FB and Twitter think as an added advantage. I think some and probably rightly so take it pretty serious.

Bryon - We all are going to use social media in the way that seems right for us individually.  Nothing wrong with that.  I think it's important to think about using it to listen, more than to update and then engaging people about what they're talking about (if we have something of value to offer the conversation).  It seems much more powerful to use these tools as targeted listening tools, than anything else.  I'm actually working on a blog post on the topic.

Hey Bryon...my strategy is to learn my way around social media without making a fool of myself or turning other people off. I will be pleased if I can remain thoughtful and graceful as I learn to navigate the social media maze.

Well I think it's working for you Bryon.  Because over the past year, I've shown a couple of your listings, and you seem very familiar to me because I see your smiling face every time I log on to Active Rain.  Nice Golden Triangle Pic!  I did the Golden Triangle back in the golden years 1985,86 & 87.

Cheers,

Bryon, you'd be surprised how productive social media could be. It's been very rewarding for my business last year. I managed to establish sound business friendships over linkedin. You need to invest time in the social media and keep the conversation going just like any other relationship. The more you invest time the better business relationships you get. However, sometimes other priorities get in the way and I barely find time to allocate just like for the last two months I did not have time to check my linkedin profile and today I found out many pending emails and contact requests.

Haven't seen a post from you in a long time or a comment on my lethbridge real estate blog, just checking back on some active rain members who have been missing for a while.   Where did you go Bryon?

Hi Bryon - Relationships are what we do!  Social media is another tool we use and we make compatible with our style.
