Are you giving back to your community - and I don't mean volunteerism

Services for Real Estate Pros with John Tooley Insurance Agency

I met yesterday with someone that I consider a mentor in my life. He gave me employment for a number of years, taught me to negotiate tough deals, set and meet tough deadlines,.... and most of all re-inforced that you must treat other people with kindness and respect.  He drove this point home by the way he treated people, even when the corporate politics made it seem that we were being challenged for our jobs.

So, you are wondering what my point is.  Well, this meeting was not a sales call.  It was just catching up with an old friend to see how things were going.  The amazing thing with this guy is that you can talk about any issue, no matter how pleasant or tough the issue is, and the conversation will end on a positive note.  It just will, I can never think of a time a conversation has not.

Today, we see a lot of challenges.  Incomes seem to be frozen, jobs seem to be scarce, (insert your favorite gripe here).  We can easily catch and spread the sour grapes syndrome if we don't watch or attitudes closely.

During our lunch we talked about all the same topics that every other casual conversation contains, and at the end I walked away again with a smile.  The entire rest of my day was better than what is typical, and I just was able to see every challenge as a possible win.

We all leave a wake wherever we go.  In this mans wake is eternal optimism.  I am going to make an intentional effort to leave the same in my wake today.  How about you?

I have been trying to get real estate agents to spend a little bit of time to help people avoid foreclosures by providing vialbe links designed to get them the help they need.  Telling people they need to get help early is like telling a man he needs to learn how to fish to feed himself, turning and walking away.

Create a page on your web site designed to tell peole how to get help.  This is what we need to do to turn this market around.  The NAR won't do it.  The media sure as hell isn't going to do it.  And our elected officials haven't a clue.  Even when you give them an idea which works they will all reject it because they are all just like the banks.

Here is a link to HUD providing links by state to organizations receiving government funds to help home owners.

To give you an idea, here is a link to my web page.  Copy anything you like from this page on how to avoid foreclosures and get loan modifications.  Use it as you see fit.

I've talked to some of these local organizations.  80% of the peole they work with have already lost money to a scam.  Search the Internet and see for yourself.  The first 300 hits are people out to make money off this problem.

The choice is yours.  To turn from evil or join the crowd.

A real estate office can definitely be a pessimistic place this day and age.  I for one am going to make it my goal, today, to turn those negative conversations in a positive direction.  Thanks for the post.

Giving is a priceless gift never forgotten. Thank you for your reminder to make a difference in someone's life by listening, mentoring or just being there as a human being first, realtor second. Every act of kindness performed by a realtor changes how we are collectively perceived and of course raises the bar on professionalism. Keep making a difference.
