Cut your operating expenses by separating business from personal

My owner is a Realtor at Century 21 Award in Mission ValleyI buy bottled water for my open houses and put my Realtor label on them to give away.

In tracking my expenses over the years, though, I realized that I was drinking just as much bottled water as I was giving away.

That's when I decided that it was time to buy a water-filtration system for the kitchen faucet.

Now I have a quart container for my own water and I can save the water bottles for my open house guests.

In looking at my expenses for January through November of 2009 compared to the same period last year, my bottled water expenses are down $332 even though I've had two fewer open houses but sixteen more visitors.

If you find yourself using your real estate resources for personal pleasure, you might see what you can do to further separate the two.

By the way, we have the PUR FM-3700 three-stage filtration system for the kitchen faucet. Retail cost was about $30 at Wal-Mart at the 2008 After-Christmas sales.

I found I was doing exactly the same thing with bottles of water.  Most of them were consumed by my family.  That doesn't make much sense.

Jim, what a nice example of how really looking at our expenses can help.  I bet we could all cut $50 a month easily just by doing what you did - examining and having that eureka moment :-)

Jim:  Very true...I have cut down on my bottled water too.   We used to go through so much around here until I just stopped buying it.

What a great idea. I'm trying to buy less bottled water, too. Not only does it get expensive, it sure is a lot of wasted plastic!

Hey, Kari - We can't always control income, but quite often we can control expenses.

Hey, Rita - Especially if you're the one eating all the cookies! LOL. I also had to quit taking chocolate candy to open houses because I was the one eating most of it.

Hey, Irene - There probably are a lot of things that don't make sense if we'll just stand back and look at the complete picture.

Hey, Kris - And $50 a month, $600 a year, can pay for a lot of gas, marketing, advertising....

Hey, Jane - You mean you stopped cold turkey?

Hey, Carra - We recycle the plastic here, getting a nickel back for each plastic bottle. That helps some.
