As a former teacher, I am well aware how the Texas school system addresses accountability and what the expectations of the teachers are.  God Bless the Teachers!  :)  For 13 challenging years, I  taught in both the Spring Branch and Cyfair school districts here in Texas.

How are schools rated?

The Texas Education Agency, TEA, is responsible for the oversight of public primary and secondary education in the state of Texas; however, it does not have any jurisdiction over private or parochial schools.

The Texas Education Agency rates all public schools, charter schools, and school districts in the State of Texas based on their Accountability Ratings System.

The criteria are the same for schools and districts.  Based on how the school or district performs, the school or district will receive one of four possible rankings: Exemplary (the highest possible ranking), Recognized, Academically Acceptable, and Academically Unacceptable (the lowest possible ranking).

The criteria that each school/district  is judged on is 1.  TAKS test   2.  SDAA II Test  3.  Dropout Rate  4.  When applicable, the Completion Rate (percentage of students who are completing or continuing their education 4 years after entering high school)

Here is how you can find out how the school your child attends is rated.

1.  Go to the TEA website.  www.tea.state.tx.us (Loads of good information here)

2.  Click on the A-Z index TAB at the top of the page

3.  Click on the Accountability Rating...... for 2009

4. Click on List of Ratings by District

5. Type in District Name.

You will get a breakdown of each school's rating in the district.  You can also see how your district as a whole is rated.   If your child is not attending a Recognized or Exemplary School, you may want to consider moving!
