JUPITER - Don Berig used to go to a separate fitness center to work out. But now, he strolls over from his home in Jonathan's Landing and into the new Fitness and Tennis Center.
"I like it so much, I'm even going to work with a fitness trainer," he said.Berig isn't alone. Melissa Collora, the new fitness director at Jonathan's Landing said that between 150 and 200 people regularly use the new facility every day, for exercise on the state-of-the art equipment, participating in the classes that range from yoga to Pilates to Zumba and cardio workouts.
"One of the most popular pieces of equipment is the virtual reality bicycle," she said. "It really gives the rider the feeling that they are in the country or along a winding path." Robert Brandon was experiencing the virtual bike ride, under the tutelage of trainer Tony Smith, as he worked out on each piece of equipment in the fitness center.
"This is really great," Brandon said. "I'm now coming here two or three times a week." The members of Jonathan's Landing Golf Club, one of the oldest private golf communities in Jupiter, voted to create the Fitness and Tennis Center in 2007.
The center, which cost $5.3 million and the improvements to both the in-town clubhouse and the one at Old Trail, which cost over $3 million were approved by 77 percent of the members, according to Don Pray, a former board member. The center opened on Oct. 26.
"We did a survey of our residents," Pray said, "and overwhelmingly, they wanted a fitness center and spa where they could enjoy exercise, and rehab from surgery or injuries without having to go to a separate location.
Bill Gould, a member at Jonathan's Landing, whose real estate business centers around the community, said that the golf club, as with any community that started in the 1970s and 1980s, has evolved over the years.
"When Jonathan's Landing was first built, there was a large community pool here, and that is gone. Then came tennis, and we've had tennis courts here for many years, since about 300 people like to play tennis regularly. And now we have the fitness center, and a part of the building is a tennis shop that overlooks the tennis courts."
The improvements to the clubhouse, particularly the one at the in-town location, have brightened the spaces considerably, Gould said. "Now our members are proud to bring friends here for lunch," he said.
"One of the nice things about Jonathan's Landing is that you don't have to be a resident to be a member," Pray said . "I live in Abacoa, but belong to Jonathan's Landing. There are members who live outside the community itself that have given up their other gym memberships and come here because it is so convenient." For more information, call (561) 743-2191.

Bill, that's great that there's a fitness center there now.  I was always amazed they never added one years ago.  The community pool never existed though, even when Salhaven owned the 606 acres, I think Kit may have been making that part up.  Thanks!
