A letter of love to my nephew

Real Estate Agent with RE/MAX Advantage

This is a letter to my nephew Matthew George. He is following in my footsteps and wrestling in school. He has had some good success this year but has lost a few close matches. Below is a letter I wrote to him last night.

I wanted to share my opinion about something that I guarantee will help you in wrestling and in life son. What do Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Walter Payton and Lance Armstrong all have in common? Not only are they all considered to be the best in their given sport but THEY ALL ARE OR WERE IN BETTER CONDITION THAN THEIR OPPONENT. This may seem real basic but trust me, it separates winners from losers.

Matthew George Tallabas

When I was wrestling my best I was in the best condition of my life. I ran more laps, did more pushups, did more pull-ups and did more agility training than anyone on my team. I would stay in the gym longer than anyone else and the results showed. When your mom saw me wrestle and beat state champion Hector Cedillo in 1973 I was in the best condition of my life. When I walked on that matt I believed with my whole heart I could defeat Hector Cedillo and there was no doubt in my mind. I believed this because I knew I had trained harder than anyone on my team. When my hand was raised in victory it was one of the most incredible days of my life. All the hard work and dedication had paid off.

Vijay Singh will hit golf balls until his hands bleed and has been known to finish a golf tournament and head right for the driving range to practice a particular shot for hours that he miss hit in the tournament. There was even a report one day that Vijay's caddy was holding a large lamp because Vijay was hitting golf balls in the dark. Both Vijay and Tiger Woods have personal trainers that push them to the limit when most pro golfers have gone home. When Walter Payton was alive he would go to his old university and train with the young guns. They would run up dirt hills and Walter Payton would always outrun guys half his age and train harder than anyone else. We all know why Lance Armstrong has accomplished what he has. He was simply in better condition than anyone else hands down. There is no magical pill to take and no one can teach it to you. Very few people in this world are blessed with the drive and determination all great achievers have.

I PROMISE YOU that if you get yourself in better condition than anyone else that you will have more stamina at the end of your matches and you will outlast your opponent. This is not a guess on my part but a guarantee! You see son, if you continue to do what everyone else does and continue to do what the coaches tell you to do and no more you will continue to get the same results.

Like Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Walter Payton and Lance Armstrong, if you start running extra laps, do extra sitt-ups, do more agility training than anyone else you will see the results that will make you a stronger, faster athlete. At the end of the last period you will outlast your opponent and have more gas to get the job done. You will have more victories like the one in the photo above and you will be rewarded for doing what most in this world are unwilling to do which is to pay the price that has to be paid and the price that all winners pay.

Life takes this kind of dedication if we want more out of it son. If we do no more than we are told to do we will be average at best. If you train your mind and read more, search more, work harder and never stop learning magical things will start to happen and your world will change.

Know that I love you and will never stop believing in you.

Uncle George

Hi George,

Great letter! And it is so true. It reminds me of a little town in Central California years ago, the local high school football team was physically way smaller than any other team in their league. The coach told the kids, "They may be bigger, they may play better. But they will NOT be in better shape." He pushed those kids hard to build their endurance, and guess what... they ended up undefeated league champions. And they were definitely a second-half team.

Thanks for sharing. and have a wonderful Christmas!

George, good to see you back.  You have a nephew that should be honored to have an Uncle that is so supportive. This is a letter that every person needs to become the best they can be.  I still remember my Father's words: " You can be anything you set your mind to be.  Failing only happens when you don't try."

Hope you've had a good year.  Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

Wonderful letter. This is important advice for being the best, no matter the task. And in a way a lost value in today's society. Society teaches us to be 'politically correct' even in sports. My daughter has competed in various sports where every child recieved a 'trophy' for just participating. How do we expect our children to strive to be better when all are treated like champions?

Your compassion and love for your nephew shines in your every word. Your advice comes from the heart through personal experience. You use real life achievers to back up your experience. I pray this letter gives him the encouragement, drive and determination to be his very best. But no matter the outcome, he is loved!

Be Blessed this Christmas,

Hi George -- You could always wrestle the other agent into submission -- a new negotiating tactic perhaps?  <just kidding>.  Seriously, what a moving story -- it humbles one and paints a clear picture on what it takes to get to the top.  I learned a long time ago that tenacity will take one far in life.

GREAT LETTER! I wrestled in high school and it was among the greatest things I ever did. It taught me what I was made of, and gave me the distinction of what it takes to win. Your nephew is lucky to have you for an uncle to love and encourage him. As my old high school wrestling coach Bill Carney told me in the middle of a rough sophomore year: "It is not the will to win. It is the will to prepare to win." The same coach saw me co-captain the team in my senior year. In wrestling, it is all about conditioning. I never forgot that, and it made me better in everything I did later.

Best of luck to your nephew. Thanks for getting my day started with happy memories.

"If you want to be creative in your company, your career, your life, all it takes is one easy step…the extra one."  Dauten

George:  So very true!  Although the recipe is well known, it is not followed by many.  That "fire in the belly", that passion that drives us is not the easiest thing to muster, and maybe that's not such a bad thing.

That focus, that vision, that single mindedness driven by passion makes formidable leaders in all fields, yet that very same passion can drive these people and those around them to personal angst.  It is a double edge sword.  I know, for I have always had that fire in the belly, that unrest, that passion driving me long and hard.  People like us, we sometimes exasperate those around us, including ourselves.

Finding that balance has always been my goal.  I'm still working on it.

Great post, George!

Mirela - Thank you so very much my friend. I would like to say I am here to stay but I have had one of the busiest years ever with my lead generation system on fire and I simply need to take care of business before anything else. This is why I have been so scarce my friend. Just know that I love you all and always will.
