Morgan's Wonderland - A Play Place for ALL!!!

Sometime in early February, San Antonio will be home to Morgan's Wonderland.  This one of a kind family fun park is specifically designed for individuals with disabilities, their families and caregivers.

The park is located in what used to be the Longhorn Quarry.  This area has become home to not only Morgan's Wonderland but also the site of the new Northeast ISD Football Stadium - Heroes Stadium and 14 new soccer fields

Located on 25 acres, Morgan's Wonderland boasts to be the first fully accessible family park in the world!  The site includes many safety features designed with the families and their special needs children in mind, such as controlled entry and exit to the park, RFID locator wristbands with touch screen monitors, and fencing around the lake and the perimeter of the park.

Some of the activities and ammenities include:

  • Specially designed air conditioned/heated and oversized ADA accessible restrooms
  • 3 Playscapes
  • Train Rides with wheelchair accessible cars
  • Ultra Accessible Carousel
  • Amphitheater
  • Catch-and-Release Fishing
  • Water Canons & Remote-Controlled Boats
  • Gymnasium (basketball, volleyball & tennis)
  • Special Event Center for up to 650 guests
  • Walk and Roll Path around lake
  • "Around the World" - themed rest areas
  • Water Works - Water Play Area
  • Off-Road Adventure Ride
  • Music Garden
  • Swings (several types including wheelchair swings)
  • Sand CircleTM
  • Sensory VillageTM
  • Garden Sanctuary with Memorial Wall
  • Several Rest Stops, Picnic Areas & Pavilions
  • 2 First Aid Stations & Feeding Room
  • Braille Signage, 3-D Park Model & Service Animal Rest Area
  • Gift Shop & Counseling Center
  • VIA Transit Center
  • 8 acre lake stocked with a variety of fish

All special needs guests receive free admission along with one guest.  Other patrons will pay a small entry fee and while there are vendors located around the park for snacks and drinks, guests are allowed to bring in outside food and coolers (no glass containers, grilling or alcohol).  Ample shade is provided throughout the park and many areas provide water misters for added comfort.  In addition, the park has plenty of areas for special events to include birthday parties, fundraisers,or family functions.

I for one, can not imaging a better use of space and resources.  The individuals with special needs and their families in San Antonio and the surrounding areas are going to finally have a place where they can enjoy the outdoors in a safe, enriching and engaging environment.

Jeanna,

I have been watching this being built and it's going to be such an awesome place for all of those kids that have special needs!

I have also been to a few fundraisers this year that have benefited Morgan's Wonderland.  I was amazed at the generosity of San Antonian's that have funded (along with others) the project!

Wow... that does sound like quite a place. Many things to do. Im sure the 'Water Works' will be the busiest section.
