A Story of A Home Stager's Meltdown!!!!

By
Home Stager with Seattle Staged To Sell www.seattlestagedtosell.com

Home Stager's Christmas TreeI was not raised with Christmas, so my friends and families were impressed, when they saw my first Christmas tree and my holiday decorations, after I got married. What impressed them most was the way I was able to intertwine both Chanukah and Christmas themes and still create a cohesive look.

After that first Christmas, years before I became a home stager, I began to help my friends and families to decorate their trees and their homes for holidays. I also tried to pass on some decorating tips.

These friends, after a while, understood that I am big on balance, flow, and harmony when it came to design. However, you wouldn’t know that now by looking at my own Christmas tree.

It all began few years ago, when my first daughter came home from school and proudly holding on a shocking pink Santa. I was hoping that the pink Santa would go into her scrapbook box, but she had other ideas; it had to go right in the middle of the tree. That year, all I could see was only the pink Santa.

Next year, a neon orange angel followed the shocking pink Santa. The first question that ran through my mind was, are you colooooooooooor blind? No, girls can’t be colorblind. She just wanted to be different from her classmates.

As the girls grew older, their involvement in holiday decorating also grew. They have their own style, especially when it comes to Christmas tree. The more scattered and hodgepodge look, the better. At first, I was beside myself and had a hard time to stop myself going to the tree and reshuffle all the ornaments. However, thankfully too, I changed my focus from the design of the tree to the energy of the home. My daughters bring such a happy and positive energy, when they sing and hang the ornaments together. I love the excitement in their eyes and to me that is what holidays are all about.

So, I might come to your home as a stager and create a beautifully designed Christmas tree for you, but as a mother I know that the most beautiful tree is in my own home.

If you happened to go to a home stager home one day and see their Christmas tree and say to yourself, “boy, I can do a much better a job”, I hope you remember this story. By the way, that shocking pink Santa is my favorite ornament.

There's just nothing better than those childhood ornaments. They will create "remember when" dialogues for the rest of your years.

Vickie, I've asked my daughter several times for her permission to post her photo too, but so far, no go. Maybe, I shouldn't have asked her to begin with? Thanks for stopping by!

Angelica, cherish is a wonderful word. My daughters still make ornaments. Pretty soon, my oldest one will leave home for college and I've to figure out a way to continue our tradition.

Jennifer, it seems your nephew is training you early. Count that as a blessing. I don't think that I could ever enjoy a traditional "perfect" Christmas tree anymore. Now,I see my tree with the pink Santa as a perfect one. You're right, sometimes, imperfections make our lives perfect. :-D

Ted, I couldn't agree more.

Thanks Gary. I know what you mean. That's why, all i could see that first year, was that pink Santa.

Christianne, you're right whatever works. I've found out that it is better for my kids to learn their heritage and have fun with it.

Amy, it is great that you're cool with it. Even if you get some visitors, let your children show their masterpiece with pride.

Russ, I am sooooo glad too. I am a mom before anything else.

Vickie, you're so right. I've collected ornaments throughout the years, but my kids' ornaments are my most favorite ones. I've made sure to preserve them well, so they can take them to their own homes one day.

I, too, was looking for pink Santa.  You must be quite creative to make the decorating blend so well.

Vanessa, I used to have popcorn and cranberries, but all that came to an end, when I got two puppies! :-D

An, what can I say, My daughter didn't let me to include the pink Santa. :( As far as being creative goes, it's easy. Just find a theme and repeat it with some variations.  I wasn't ready for the shocking PINK Santa, so that year, it really stood out. To be honest, I've not been able to tone it down that much either. Maybe because, my daughter keeps adding pink glitter to it.

I love all the crazy stuff my kids make. I use them as paperweights and stuff. I made a cutting board for my mom when I was 11 and she still has it. LOL. Have fun, Merry Everything.

I like the hodgepodge look.  Too many people try to have their trees so perfect that they don't even look good to me.  Why is everyone using plain, boring white lights these days??  I like the colored ones... but I don't have a tree, so it's their lives not mine.

Shirin,

what a beautiful story. My daughter just came home with a bright popsicle stick santa that she proudly put on our tree!!! I was shocked at first, now I think the popsicle stick santa looks at home!

Every year we go out and buy the kids a new ornament that they pick themselves for the tree, the tree now has quite a collage of decoration, but each peace means something

Shirin,

The tensest Christmas ever was the one where my dad learned my mom had thrown away all the kid's handmade ornaments. She was sick of styrofoam and wanted a decent tree! Go with shocking pink Santa.

What a great story! And yes, those shocking pink Santa's are all the rage... Now I have a 2 yr old grandson who has his own ideas about the tree. I was smart, I went to the dollar store and got cheap plastic stuff to put on the tree this year. My glass ornaments and wonderful keepsakes my girls made for me oh so many years ago are packed safely away. But he is having a ball, and watching him with the tree is amazing.

To each his own! Happy Holidays!

The tree reflects the personality of those in the home, I love the fact that my kids help decorate the tree, they put their own spin on it and it is beautiful.

Nathan, I love the idea of paper weight too. A cutting board? Was that a school project? I love your mom for keeping and using it all these years.

Donna, there is nothing wrong with being different and have your own look. Even though, I use white lights myself, I enjoy my neighbors colored lights. ;)

Vanna, I love it. Happy collecting. Don't forget to put a date on it and take a picture of your daughter next to it.

Ricklie, what a nice surprise to see you here. Thanks or your support and for stopping by!

Al, we also have a very similar tradition. The girls know that these ornaments will end up on their trees.

Irene, I don't know what to say. That must have been a tense Christmas. I'm sticking with the pink Santa.

Joe, LOVE IT. Your tree rocks and I'll let my daughter know that pink is the new black. :-D

Andrea, what a clever idea. Have fun with your grandson and you're absolutely right, to each his own!!!

Dawn, thanks for stopping by and yes, memories are our most precious possessions.

Andrew, yes I agree. The trees in homes with kids, DO have lots of personality. You got to love it.

As long as the kids are happy it does not matter what color the decorations are -- or if they match-- all the best for a great holidays season.
