Android or I Phone?

Reblogger Peter Di Eduardo

Great posting about those of us who are thinking of transitioning away from their old devices into the new age of mobile real estate and technology.  On one hand you have your iPhone devotees;  I'm not convinced its the best too for the trade as their network isn't up to par.  GSM infrastructure in my area is too spotty and I've found that Verizon has the best coverage.  This address the carrier/coverage issue.  Second, iPhone's mass consumer appeal means that many people buy the phone for its pleasure an leisure use as opposed to a business device. That means more people downloading huge amounts of data a less space for calling.  But this may depend on your area.

Device;  I went for the HTC Eris on Verizon.  Essentially, its the Droid but on HTC's platform and without  the keyboard.  I prefer candy-bar type phones and the Eris has a great form factor.  They will upgrade the ROM from 1.5 to 2x in Q1 which is fine by me.  Motorola Droid runs 2.0.1 and will probably get 2.1 very soon.

Since Android runs on Google's platform, its essentially a porthole into google's search engine.  Also, it will OTA sync with Google Calendar/contacts or Outlook.  Google is constantly updating and improving its desktop features and will soon rival anything that Outlook currently has.

The main difference between android/apple devices vs Palm OS, BB or others is the availability to run apps in the background,  Huge user-interface improvement over Palm OS BB.

Let's lay out some background as to why I need a phone upgrade to help you better understand my frustration with my current phone the Treo 750.

For the past 5 years I've been shackled to the Treo model phones on the Verizon network.  First I had the Treo 650 which was a Palm based phone.  It's call quality was poor and internet browsing was akin to a 14400 baud dial up connection on aol in the early 90's.  I upgraded a year ago to the Windows based Treo 750.  What a dissappointment.  It's slow, clunky and frankly is terrible with online applications and web browsing.  I should have junked this treo a long time ago, but have kept limping along with it for the one feature I viewed as absolutely crucial to my business.

The NWMLs uses the GE Supra E Key lock box and the Treo is the only phone I am aware of that actually has an infra red port to open the boxes.  Blackberry has a key fob option, but I'm leaning towards a fully functional smart phone.  I'm looking for an all in one phone, that has great voice quality, excellent blue tooth, fast apps, browsing and a good network coverage area here in Washington.

I'd also love to find a phone that has either an infra red port or an app that will allow me to open lockboxes.

What are my options?  Does either the I Phone or the Android offer an IR App for GE Supra Lockboxes?

Feel free to feature this one AR staff.  I want as many opinions as possible to ensure I make a smart purchase this time :)

I think for the moment the iPhone still has the edge, in that the number of Apps available for it is far higher than those on the Android. But the Android is catching up first.

There are so many options today when it comes to choosing a cell phone. I really enjoy my blackberry, but I know people that have the old school phones and enjoy them just as much. I guess to each their own! Have a great day.

I hope you'll remember me if you learn of anyone moving to "The OC" and I will do the same!

I think that area coverage is the pedominating thread here, as it should be.  We realtors are being faced with challenges never seen before and response time is critical.

Next factor is which type of device(s) your carrier has and which device you're comfortable using.  Like any tool, its there to get the job done.

Is there a way that you include this blog in the Google Android group?

Jerry- I've sent numerous requests to my local provider about coming up with a work-around for opening the Supra/GE lockboxes with something other than infra-red.  Unless a hacker gets ahold of one of the lockboxes and figures out its workings we may be stuck for a long time.
