GPS, A REALTOR’S® Best Friend

By
Real Estate Agent with Southwest Missouri Realty

As REALTORS® in Springfield Missouri, we do a LOT of driving. One useful tool to make it easier to get around is the handy GPS. Ever wonder how it works? High above your head are 24 satellites in orbit to allow your device to do its thing. Your GPS receives signals from these satellites that tell them their location and measures the distance between any three satellites to triangulate your exact location. It's kind of like big brother on steroids except that your GPS doesn't transmit; it only receives signals.   GPS

The big question is, is it useful to you?

Personally I don't miss the days of trying to decipher driving directions on the MLS to homes for sale. Yes I still use the written directions but it's very nice to have the GPS to get me in the ballpark, and usually right in front of the house. Its kind of fun to hear "turn right on Maple street in one mile and you have reached your destination!" Sometimes it plays games with me like "turn here" when there's no street, or tries to take me the long way around, but usually its spot on. Like all electronics, they started out expensive but are now very affordable.
If you're a REALTOR® and don't have a GPS, you don't know what you're missing!

CharitaVerizon offered GPS and I loved it.  I recently switched to T-Mobile and GPS navigation is not available.  Now I realize how much I depended on it.  Guess I'll be investing in one for my car.

Word of caution though; I just read an article online today that car these are targeting cars with GPS' and are being guided directly to the owner's house by using the "home" feature on the GPS.  When I had my Verizon phone, I did not same my home address and label it "home" it just put in a place or landmark close to home.  If I was someplace where I needed directions home, I figured if I could just get close I'd be okay.

One of the greatest investments I have made.  Most of the driving directions in our MLS is for those who know the area, not for those getting to know the area.  I don't know what I would have done several times this year without my GPS!
