Okay, so at this point, all the big-box stores are swamped, city traffic is bumper to bumper, holiday sales have stripped the shelves of all but the most marginal of inventory (size S or XXXXL, anyone?) and your nerves are frayed beyond repair. So, do yourself and your community a favor: ditch it all and head for Tumalo.
There you'll find "Tumalo Tinsel," a small crafts market stocked with absolutely nothing you'll find in any of those mass-market department stores in town. Instead, the cozy community space (once home to "Collage," a card store that recently relocated to a larger space in Redmond) is stocked with handmade wares created by Oregonians -- primarily those from Central Oregon.
Although there isn't much for the man in your life here (unless he's into gourmet food or smelling really good), there are plenty of intriguing, out-of-the-ordinary gifts for just about everyone else on your list. And, yes, the region is well-represented with a broad variety of goods. Here are just a few:
From Tumalo: Dried lavender bouquets & wreaths, lavender-scented soaps & lotions, plus lavender-infused spices & teas (even lemonade!) from Tumalo Lavender.
From Bend: Hand-knit scarves & hats, felted purses & vessels by Sahnya Greenfield.
From Sisters: Soaps, candles, fabric bags & magnetic jewelry by Leslie King of Abigail's on Main.
From Powell Butte: therapeutic herbal teas & all-nature skin-care products from T's Tonics.
From Prineville: food-scented (pomegranate, butter cream, cinnamon-bun, banana-nut bread) candles from Cozy Home Candles.
From Madras: Rustic wood-framed photos from Jen Schaffren.
The market is only open for the holidays (last day: Dec. 23). Proceeds of a number of raffle baskets benefit the Tumalo School's Family Access Network. Also: Support a local child by picking a name from The Giving Tree. Hours: 10 am-6 pm.
64672 Cook Ave, Suite 2.
Merry Christmas!
