It's Friday and just one short week until Christmas. Most of us will have stuff to do in preparation for the holidays, (like shop for instance). On the other hand, you may need a distraction... Maybe you'll find something of interest here with my round up of movies and events in Iowa City and Coralville this weekend December 18 - December 20.
As always, I'll start with new movie releases.
Two new movies to share with you this week. The first is the highly anticipated AVATAR, James Cameron's first new movie since the Titanic. Now that's a hard act to follow! You can only imagine what the expectation level is on that, can't you? I know it will be a runaway hit with PC Gamers, (like my son), who will appreciate the technical aspect of the movie. From what I've heard, it's a "must see" in 3D, but that won't be possible around here as we don't have an IMAX in the Iowa City area, and the Davenport IMAX will not be showing it until spring. (Dumb decision if you ask me - As my son pointed out, it will be out on DVD by then!)
Not a whole lot I can say about the other new movie in our theaters this weekend. It's a romantic comedy with Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker: Did You Hear About The Morgans? Both very likeable actors, so I guess if you like them then you'll like the movie, if not, then you should probably find something else to distract you for two hours. You can catch these movies at the Coral Ridge Mall Cinema in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Theatre in Iowa City.
The Mill, Iowa City's best live entertainment venue, as voted in the Press Citizen's Best of the Area List has a particularly fun weekend lined up this weekend. Shame Train is performing tonight, with Kevin Gordon on Saturday and The Starlings on Sunday.
If you like your country music with dance then check out the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. Great food, great music and free wi-fi...They often have specials too like all you can eat ribs on Wednesdays...They're on Facebook and you'll find a list of their specials there.
I'm going to finish up for this week with the Riverside Casino. More country music for us here. The Hitman Tim Dirth is performing in the Show Lounge on Friday and Saturday at 5.00pm. And The Five of Hearts will follow at 8.30pm on both nights. On Sunday they have a matinee performance at 2.00pm with the 50's and 60's Rock 'n' roll band the Do's & Don'ts.
