Bridging the Gap

3 weeks ago I had a complete computer crash on my PC.  I consider myself "dangerours" enough on the PC to problem solve most basic issues, but I had to hire a guy to come and try and save all my info.  To make a long story  short, he was able to save all my info and I only had a few days of being "down" and not working.  But the process got me thinking about my office set up and getting the best equipment.  I have multiple back up systems in place, both external hardrives in my office and paid offsite backups, anti virus software etc.... and I still got hit with a bug/virus and almost lost everything.  It was my moment of pure panic.  As appraisers we have to keep work files for up to 5 years and in this electronic age, alot of my data is saved on  digital/electronic files.

With all of this, I decided to try something new.  I purchased a MAC as they are less prone to bugs.  With the new Pentium processors MACs are  now capable of running Windows.   A lot of MLS, Public Records data bases and appraisal software are PC based, and with the new software that allows MAC to run Windows, I can still operate my business in the PC world from a MAC.  This does not mean that I am not prone to another computer crash, as any computer can crash and anyone can lose info, or that I wont' get a bug/virus.  It was just something I was willing to try and so far everything is running great.  The set up was easy, it functions better and faster.  Hopefully soon MLS and Public Data Bases will be more compatible with MACs/Safari and vice versa.  But for now I've "bridged the gap" of the two worlds in my office and it is working well.
