Tough Year in Real Estate

This has been a tough year for many of us and a few of my Realtor friends have put their licenses on hold. For those of us whose business has turned mostly into distressed properties, we are faced with many challenges, not the least of which is an emotional roller coaster. In my case I have had some wonderful clients who are in failure mode and not happy to be where they are. Trying to help them see their way through a very challenging time can be difficult. This has brought to mind two sayings that I use for myself frequently.

"Change generally happens when the pain of what you are doing is greater than the fear of change."

and...

"When God gives us a present it generally is wrapped in a problem."

Here's hoping for a joyful, prosperous, and peaceful 2010.

Sandy - I think the tough times force us to grow or just put our heads in the sand.

I hate to say but next year doesnt project much better. My bad, as a realtor I must say that everything is great, we have sold more properties this year then ever. I sick of of the bull.

Every market is not struggling. If we give readers on blog posts not channeled "members only" more of whatever the media decides to print, broadcast daily that is one size fits all and depressingt, it only it perpetuates the "times are tough, better put off buying, selling" and gloom and doom. These are the best of times if you are a buyer, have money saved, and planned for any ups and downs. The 1980's with 16% interest rates...now there was a nationwide oil embargo kinda of market jam. But we got thru it. There is always a real estate market...but like musical chairs, not every broker will get a seat, or more than their share unless they work harder, dig deeper, get creative. AR is the right place to learn.

Sandy - This has been a year most of us will remember for a long time. Many lessons learned, challenges that are making us stronger.  I look forward to a great 2010.  And, I hope yours will be awesome, too.

A timely quote is a wonderful way to put things in perspective--change is a given; we must find a way to work with it and make it work for us.
