Last week my wife and I went to the Woodbridge Deli, we go there often, ordered our lunch, waited for it to be made, talked with the workers, texted on the phone. When it came time to pay I was pre-occupied and wasn't thinking about anything other than what I was doing. Paid the cashier and went back to the office to eat. While I was eating it dawned on me that somehow she(the cashier) must not have charged me for my sandwhich. So I made a mental note to call her to let her know.

Got done with lunch and before I knew it was heading home and didn't call. Ok so tomorrow I will call.

You know what happened right, I didn't right it down or type it into my crackberry so tomorrow came and went and I didn't call.

So the next day I decided the heck with the phone call, I'm just going to go there and pay for my sandwhich. I showed up at the deli and had to wait to speak to the cashier. I started to tell her what had happened and she didn't remember not charging me the correct amount. She was surprised that I came back and gave me a discount to boot. She also mentioned something about me being an "angel" and "going to heaven".

My question to everyone reading this is.... How much credibility and integrity did I just create with that move? There were several other employees in the store at the time, all of them know we are in the real estate business.

It is true that the business probably would have never known, but I knew and I could not just forget it.

We live by our actions not our words. I don't care if I ever get any business from anyone in the deli, it was the right thing to do. Period. End of statement.

I went grocery shopping last week, and my first stop was in the deli to pick up a "diet sushi" which is just avacado rolls.  I ate them as I did my shopping as I was starving.  When I went to check out, I put the empty container up on the counter with everything else.  I didn't realize until I got home that she didn't charge for them, but also the empty container was not in a bag.  She must have thrown it away just thinking it was an empty container... I did not go back as it was only $3.

You did the right thing.

I'm sure will be going back. Next time you are in the store go to the courtesy counter and let them know you want to pay for something that you did not get charged for and just watch the reaction. That alone is worth the 3.00.

Here is another thing. If you have children bring them with you. It will teach them by your actions. All the talk in the world about doing what is right is worthless compared to one simple act.

Hi Rick, thanks. I agree I didn't do it for them. I did it for me. I like to have a clear conscious.

Bill -

Good going.  It was the right thing to do.  And definitely worth the seven bucks.

One word: KARMA!

You absolutely did the right thing.  You do good things and good things will happen to you.  When I was a kid, may parents told me about a time when there was an erroneous bank deposit in their account for over $100,000.  They were in shock and of course considered keeping it, but in the end told the bank about it.  In the end they knew they did the right thing and at this point in my life, I know they did as well (when I was younger, I thought they were crazy!!!)

Joel, thanks.

David what an amazing story and example of doing the right thing. I'm sure they have been blessed many times over as a result.

Leslie it is a shame when doing the right thing becomes a surprise. It makes me think how far this country has progressed to an entitlement mentality.

Happy Holidays to All

Well said Bill- and it is quite irrelevant if one works as an agent or works for the Zoo in the Bronx...It was the right thing to do.

Catherine, everyone seems to agree that it was the right thing to do.  I would feel terrible if the next time I went back to the deli they remembered and then I was embarrassed by not fessing up.  At least now I can rest easily.

Thanks for the comment.
