Mudslides: who is responsible?

Real Estate Sales Representative with for real estate results in the Tri-Cities.

We live in what is affectionatley referred to as the Pacific "Wet" Coast because we live on the edge of a rainforest. You might say that we are, "actively rained" upon; more than many can sustain (thank goodness; otherwise we'd be overpopulated- *lol*).

Vancouver's Average Rain Conditions...

As a result of this and the mountainous topography of the area, we inevitably experience mudslides, and especially where more severe slopes have been cleared for homes.

Like a Skier at Whistler Mountain (don't forget the 2010 Vancouver Olympics), the rain moves faster down a cleared hill and can wash-out obstacles in its way.

I'd like to hear about any stories where this may have happened, perhaps near you, but with an insurance claim/liability experience. Do you even know if your local insurance providers cover such events?

If you're interested, here are details of the most recent mudslide in our area [...]

I haven't had a chance to check it out yet Terry, but I'm wondering whether regular home insurance covers these types of events, if a rider is required, or if they are considered "Acts of God" and therefore exempt from claims?

I'm going to follow the recent local incident because, according to some of the media reports, the City of Coquitlam has been negligent in following up on citizen concerns.

"Buyer Beware!"
