Be encouraged by the humble Inukshuk

The Olympic Winter games are just around the corner, hosted in the beautiful Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia. The official logo . . .

Olympic Winter Games 2010

reminded me of some photos I shot on a family vacation in Newfoundland, 2008.

Little inukshuks

We stayed in a little cottage in Conception Bay, and there were rocks everywhere. It inspired us to have an Inukshuk building event (the rock figures are called Inukshuks). We made large ones and really small ones, then had fun photographing them at different angles and in different lighting conditions. The two above were only a few inches tall.

Inukshuk at Sunset

Sunset, of course, made for the most beautiful photos.

An inukshuk is one of the oldest objects found in the subarctic regions. They are made out of unworked stone for the purpose of marking a place, route or memorial. They are meant to say, "Someone was here" or "You are on the right path".

Kind of like little symbols of encouragement and fellowship, in such a vast and barren landscape!

As my mind typically works, these little guys got me thinking . . . what markers are we leaving to encourage those behind us?

The ActiveRain Community is a lot like the little Inukshuk, with the ability to mark out the right path, and encourage those coming from behind. This morning I was reading a post by Diane Rice, about how we can help new members along in the Rain by giving them a day all their own. Wouldn't that be a great source of encouragement?!

Learn more about inukshuks here.

Deena...Wonderful photos....even MORE wonderful is the 'story' you present; even the smallest thing that one does in everyday life---can make a LARGE impression of all you meet, interact with, or who come upon your contribution with out your knowledge.

Beautiful message you provide through the great pictures.
Merry Christmas to you & yours.

I've seen those before and wondered what they were. I think I saw them up in beautiful Ontario.

Thanks for illuminating me!

Hi Deena!  Now, i have mispronounced Inukshuk  in my mind.... is it:

  • In UKE Shook
  • Eye NOOKS huck
  • EEE knocks hook (Enoch's hook)
  • E NEW chuke

... anyway THANKS for the mention, the pictures are beautiful... as the writing.  These formations remind me of the stones God commanded the children of Israel to place as markers to remember that it was HE who had delivered them out!

Your gift is showing..... and you are leaving your mark for all to see

Hi Barb & Sal - "they" say it's the little things that count!

Hi Leander, thanks for visiting. Simple things have a beauty all their own.

Caron, really glad you stopping by.

Hey there, Rich. Always glad to "illuminate".

Diane, I believe the correct pronunciation is: short i-nook-shook (like book). Leaving markers is not a new concept! We actually do it all the time in a more modern way . . . and isn't that kind of what graffitti is about? Wanting someone else to know we were here and mattered in some way?

Deena--Great photos of Inuksuk.  During our trip to Alaska this fall, I purchased a jade Inuksuk.  Can't wait to watch the Olympics in a few weeks. I agree Diane has good ideas and so do you.  I am glad we met here in the Rain.

Merry Christmas  Merry Christmas   Mary

Those are cool and I had no idea that is what they were called.  The logo is not bad either.

Down here we just call those balanced rocks. LOL. I'd love to get to Vancouver for the Olympics. I was fortunate to get to go to the 1984 Summer Olympics in L.A. since I lived right there, but I like the Winter Olympics better.

Best wishes for health, happiness, peace, and prosperity in 2010, and beyond.

Happy Holidays!

Hi Fellows - thanks for stopping by!

Brian - it is a very fitting logo. There is a large an Inukshuk in the city of Vancouver that is a symbol to greet visitors.

Jim, I also prefer watching the winter Olympics! They are pretty exciting.

Hi Russell - If you are a fan of Rodeos, you would love the Stampede! It's quite a big deal, and has a colorful history! Thanks for subscribing, and you hope see you again soon.

Very informative post, and great pictures too!  Your little inukshuks are cute!  I met a lot of Canadians today at my open house, but nobody from Calgary this time.
