Mayor Martin Chavez Albuquerque NM We celebrated the 4^th of July in Albuquerque at the "Freedom Fourth" bash at the Balloon Fiesta Park. After a heavy storm that brought hail, we were able to get out. The city had a free Park & Ride that made shuttling back and forth a breeze. We got to the park in time to hear our own Mayor Martin Chavez take to the stage and play for two songs.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts

Over 65,000 people showed in spite of the weather to see the fireworks and rock out with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. I have to say the city's Cultural Services Department did a great job with this event. It was only one dollar admission, free bus service, and free bottled water. All in all, it was a great time.

The photos aren't that great since I was unable to hold the camera steady enough for nighttime. The firework photos where taken with my phone since both sets of batteries died by then.

Susie - the best part was this was the first concert for my daughter who is almost 12. She liked that I had been to a Joan Jett concert back in the 80's. So it was an awesome event!

Ashley, kinda wish I'd been watching the cool, big city-sponsored fireworks. I was at my sister's instead, watching what were supposed to be cool, small, legal private fireworks...'til her neighbors brought out there cool, big, highly illegal stuff and mishandled it, causing one that was supposed to go off 500 feet in the air to explode at ground level, in the laps of several neighbors. That ended the fun, as all the small fry were screaming and terrified at that point.

Ranks as one of the few times I've been tempted to "narc" someone out!

Anyway, despite your disclaimers, I think you've got some mighty good "4th" pictures up here!

Laura - My brother tends to get out of control with the fireworks so I avoid the family get together on the 4th. Turns out he took his family to the city bash as well. It really was a great time and Natasha got to have another first with the concert!

Rita - I am seeing more of them in the last couple of years. It really is great to see ABQ doing events like this making it a great place to live!
