Run Your Mouth and See What Happens

Here is a quick blurb from the associated press about the latest complainers.

"NJ lawmakers ask MTV to cancel 'Jersey Shore'"

TRENTON, N.J. - MTV is getting more pressure to cancel its "Jersey Shore" reality show.

The latest criticism comes from the New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus, which says the show promotes derogatory ethnic stereotypes and is "wildly offensive."

In a letter sent Tuesday to the president of Viacom, MTV's parent company, caucus chairman Joseph Vitale asks that the show be immediately taken off the air.

The state lawmakers also have asked advertisers to boycott the show, which focuses on eight tanned 20-somethings and their escapades in Seaside Heights, a popular New Jersey beach town.

On Wednesday, a Viacom spokesman referred a request for comment to an MTV spokesperson, who did not immediately respond. MTV has said its intention is not to stereotype or offend.

It is my understanding that one of the goals of this show is to not only depict silly escapades of some goodlooking 20 somethings, but, also, and perhaps more so to show that these individuals actually have more substance and character than their antics alone would otherwise convey.

The production is dubbed as "reality" TV, but all of these shows are designed and orchestrated to entertain a particular audience.

If we take these shows too seriously than we could likewise have reasoned that all Jewish people are slouches based on watching "Seinfeld" or that most men are perverts based on "Two and a Half Men" or that half the population were homosexual based on "Will and Grace".

If you would like to protest and boycott shows, maybe you should start with the many dramas which are predicated upon murder.  Take a look at our inner cities and tell me that murder is not a problem.  You can't.

Here is a list of some of the most popular shows, all with the underlying theme being murder:

  • Law and Order;
  • Law and Order, Criminal Intent;
  • Criminal Minds;
  • Numbers;
  • NCIS;
  • NCIS, Los Angeles;
  • CSI;
  • CSI, Miami;
  • CSI, New York

Do you think that companies are not capable on their own of deciding whether or not they should advertise on a particular show?

Do you think that you should be the judge as to what people watch and do not watch, as if they are not capable of determining on their own as to what they find acceptable or unacceptable?

No, No, we need the paternal big government to tell us what to do, because we are too stupid.

Stereotypes?  What in the world is the "New Jersey Italian American Legislative Caucus"?

Now that fat boy is the governor, Jersey Shore is one of New Jersey's better businesses.
