It's coming up to the weekend again. And it's a pretty special weekend at that... Christmas is the one holiday I can say sneaks up on me every time... I know it's coming and am always surprised how quickly it arrives! Never more than this year of course as I move back into my house after my fire, am surrounded by moving boxes and no carpet... It's all good though, it beats the hotel room!
Doing my research for my usual weekly look at new movies and events in the area I learned something new today. Initially I was surprised to learn that Christmas Day is typically the busiest day of the year for movie theaters... Then I thought about how going to the movies is a real family affair and figured it made total sense. At any rate, it makes it all the more important for me to get this post out promptly for this special weekend. This is what's going on in Iowa City and Coralville this weekend December 25 - December 27:
Three new movies opening on Christmas Day... Unless you're living in a cave you will know about the movie It's Complicated with Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. It's hard to miss with all the advertising on TV - A romantic comedy with the tried and tested triangle story and with three great actors - sounds like good holiday fun to me...
Looking for something more meaty? Then we have Sherlock Holmes with Robert Downey Jr. for you. (No need for a synopsis on that one, is there?)
Now if you're looking for something completely different, then there's Up in the Air with George Clooney. It's about a businessman who's on the verge of reaching his goal of 5 million frequent flyer miles when his company starts cutting back on business travel. This not only has an impact on his frequent flyer miles, but also on his love life... From the reviews I've read this is a smartly made movie and pick of the bunch for this week.
You can catch It's Complicated and Sherlock Holmes at both the Coral Ridge Mall Cinema in Coralville and the Sycamore Mall Theatre in Iowa City. Up in the Air is only showing at the Sycamore Mall Theatre. It's worth the drive though, it's a fabulous movie theater.
Moving onto live entertainment. The Mill is closed on Christmas Day - They make up for that on Saturday when Catfish Keith, the accoustic blues legend performs.
Another great place to chill is the Wildwood Smokehouse & Saloon. They are also closed on Christmas Day. On Saturday Heather Warren and Matt Gogel will take to the stage. Great food, great music and free wi-fi...They often have specials too like Wings and cheap beer on Monday and all you can eat ribs on Wednesday...They're on Facebook and you'll find a list of their specials there.
Once again I'm going to finish up for this week with the Riverside Casino who are NOT closed on Christmas Day. Mr Riverside Dennis Albee is performing on both Friday and Saturday. The Buckinghams are also performing on Saturday, (Boxing Day for me and for other Commonwealth countries like Canada too I think). Sunday you can get out your dancing shoes out and enjoy some swing dance ballroom music with Polyester Blend.
