Buzz vs. Content....The winner is....Buzz!

Here's a testament to the power of marketing. Last week in the midst of all of the iPhone media buzz (bigger then iScooter? maybe). T-Mobile announced a real cool new technology that could ultimately be bigger then the iPhone.

T-Mobile has released a service that leverages VOIP and Wi-Fi to bring your cell phone that much closer to being your one line fits all line. The service costs $10 per month and here's how it works, in a nutshell. When your special T-Mobile cell phone is in Wi-Fi hot spot it actually grabs the Wi-Fi signal and uses the Internet to route the call, (not sure how WEP keys would work in this scenario)...oh and did I mention the VOIP calls are free? Also, the calls don't count against you minutes.

The potential is huge, especially for Realtors. I don't think I know a Realtor who's cell phone works at home, unless on your tippy-toes next to a particular window count. This could eliminate checking voice mails on a bunch of different phones as well the long list of numbers on the business cards.

Here is a great article in the N.Y. Times about this announcement.

that sounds like it could be dangerous...people running around trying to steal signal from wireless routers.

Sounds like the wave of the future. If you want to look at some pretty cool technology, look at www.grandcentral.com; it is VOIP technology that was recently purchased by Google of all companies; basically you can use their number as your main number, and you can route the # to several different numbers including your office, cell, or wherever you'd like, and the best thing of all, is that it is free AND sends you an email as well as a text message, without having to spend your minutes or clog up your voicemail. I have some friends in the high level IT world that share some of the applications that are coming from several providers, and they would absolutely blow your mind! Also, while it is not advertised, I know that both Sprint and Nextel offer UNLIMITED calls and TEXT for $199 per month. It has saved me thousands since I switched over to these plans!
