Happy Kwanzaa from Red Lodge, Montana
Today is the first day of Kwanzaa, a celebration of family, community and culture. To all those who celebrate this holiday, I want to wish you a very happy Kwanzaa.
Although many have heard the name Kwanzaa, I think that not many know how this holiday started and what it represents.
If you want to learn about it, check out this great post by Russel Ray: MC, SG, HH, HH, HK, and HNY - Part six: Happy Kwanzaa!
I also made some research online to find out more about the kinara, the candle stick holder seen in the photo. It holds seven candles: 3 red, 1 black and 3 green. Red, black and green represent the Pan-African colors. The red represents the noble blood that units all people of African ancestry, the black represents the people and the green represents the rich land of Africa.
Please check out Russel's post for more details and for the significance of the word on each candle.
During Kwanzaa people say Habari Gani, which in Swahili means "What's the News?"
Today, also happens to be Boxing Day in Canada. For more info, check out Marc Swartz's post: Happy Boxing Day 2009 (December 26).
